A member of the Dur- ham East 4-H Club and several other orani- zations for young people who live and work on the farms, Sharyn placed third in the 4-H judging competition two years ago. At the Lindsay Fair, she" has won the champion showmanship award, and was reserve champion in the calf competition. At the Orono Fair, her list of awards is just as im- pressive with a Junior champion and Reserve champion calf, reserve championships in dairy and livestock showman- ship, and the 1981 grand champion showmanship award. Sharyn is the daughter of Frank and Donna Barkey, and with her very active involve- ment in the dairy cattle business, it is not sur- prising to learn that she plans to stay on the farm after studying agriculture at the Un- iversity of Guelph. Sharyn admits that there aren't too many ladies involved in the actual judging of dairy and livestock compet- itions around the country. But that could change in the not too distant future, she said with a smile on her face. To enter the national 4-H judging compet- itions, Sharyn used photos of championship dairy cattle to assign - them points. The point totals were then com- pared with the points these cattle received in actual Holstein Assoc- iation competitions.
