Earl Cuddie, rlerk- administrator for the Township of Scugog, has the expansion of two local cemeteries on his books. Both Greenbank United Cemeteries Board and the Cart- wright Union Cemeteries Board have made ap- plications for expansion and he believes there will be no problems gettin the approvals. : One tends to raise an eyebrow when a cemetery plans expan- sion. It's easy to assume there are more deaths occurring in an area if a particular graveyard is growing. In fact, tomb- stones are know for their ability to reveal the history of a community. A glance at the stones in Greenbank United Cemetery shows the year a cyclone came through the village, destroying property and lives as it went. They also tell the story of diptheria and how it claimed the lives - of local children. Greenbank and Cart- wright residents needn't fear an outbreak of disease or another cyclone, however. The expansion of the com- munity's cemeteries has INSTANT PASSPORT PHOTOS Ready whilé you wait. For your conyenience call for appointment. 'Basically, somebody gave them some land, probably a long time ago, and they've decided now it's the time to go 'ahead (and expand)," Mr. Cuddie explains. George Beare, a member of the Green- bank United Cemeteries Board, is thinking of the future of the community. With 25 homes going up in the next year, the village is growing and rather than run out of space, he says the Board would like to see the ex- pansion completed now. More and more people, including young people, are buying their plots in advance, so even though a cemetery might not look full, it will often be filled up with pre-sold stakes of land. "It's foresight more than anything else," Mr. Beare says. "More peo- ple are buying plots all the time. The price will be astronomical in a few years." Merrill Van Camp, a member of the Cart- wright Union Cemeteries Board, is experiencing the same thing. "Our cemetery now, the plots, are pretty well "all taken up," he says. "Be prepared and have some place where you want to be buried. When a child dies it's no time to purchase a plot. Do it in advance." Mr. Beare is also con- tinually trying to main- tain and improve the Greenbank Cemetery. he finds the history is ir- resplaceably rich in a community_ burial ground, something that can't be replaced. "My theory is we've operated a very suc- cessful cemetery. We're always trying to improve it because it's part of our heritage." The oldest tombstone in the Greenbank Cemetery is dated back in "either 1824 or 1842," Mr. Beare isn't sure which. But there is one stone in particular that sticks out in his mind. "It says, 'I died because of unkind friends," he says with a chuckle. "He must have had a twisted mind." o Bring this Coupon (ERT) (2) 5X7°S Our Bonus Plush Toy is a (10) Wallets Just for Participating in Our Portrait Promotion. high quality soft-stuffed animal made of the finest plush fiber - just the right size for your little one.
