There hasn't been a great deal of time for tea this past week, however. It's been the kind of week where a month's worth of jobs have been com- pressed into seven days, but Mary isn't complain- ing. She's a volunteer in every sense of the word and that doesn't leave time for complaints. "Any type of volunteer work I do is done for the pleasure of doing it. I . can't give money but I can give the time," says the woman who is involv- ed with nearly every volunteer group in town. Things didn't used to be this way. Until a few years ago, Mary had her hands full with her fami- ly -- with ten children and a husband to take care of she didn't have the time or the energy to volunteer her services to the community. Melvin Cannon was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces stationed in Scotland when Mary met -him. She was an usherette in a Scottish cinema and he was smoking in a section of the theatre reserved for non-smokers. She told him to put out his cigarette. A year later. he asked her to marry him. She said yes. The wedding took place in 1946, shortly before the couple moved to Melvin's homeland, Canada. Initially they lived in Toronto, but Mary has spent most of her life in Port Perry. " "There was a certain amount of excitement when I came to Canada. You used to hear some real horror stories from some of the girls who had come here," she remembers. "But we were in love, and in those days you went with your husband." Once their family was started, Mary found herself tied down to rais- ing children, which she didn't really mind, being somewhat shy at the time and timid about meeting new people. Her first venture into the community came when she started selling Avon cosmetics when her LIBRARY NEWS The Children's Dept. of the Scugog Library has a collection of story books in French. daughter Sheila (now a Trent University stu- dent) was two. She also tried selling Fuller Brushes and joining the Legion's Ladies Aux- iliary. As a represen- tative of the Legion, she was asked to join the Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Suddenly she found herself doing volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, later incor- porated with Community Care. Before she knew it, she was working for Operation Scugog, the United Church and the Scugog Social Planning Council. She credits all the volunteering she does now to Avon, 'the first time I had gone out of the house." About six years ago, the Scugog Social Plann- ing Council was formed to act as a coordinating association for all com- munity organizations in the area. It's constitu- tional research the needs of people in the community and to determine how ef- fectively they are being met. Through this research, Operation Scugog was formed to organize the different associations who were giving to the needy at Christmastime. 'Sometimes, some families would receive' things from every group in town, while some needy families were overlooked. completely," she says. Community Care was also spun from the web of the council, as was the local Big Brothers organization. "What we do is search for a need in the com- munity and then try and work towards it,"" she explains. Mary is just starting her second term as coun- cil president but she's also the secretary of the hospital auxiliary, secretary of the Legion's ladies auxiliary, Vice- Grand of the Rebekah Lodge and an elder in the United Church. Which is not to forget her membership in the Honeydale Institute and the Senior Citizen's Club. "1 don't like to belong to an organization and just sit there. In fact, I get bored," Mary says. "It's easy to sit in the house and brood but you can't do that or you'll end up in Whitby. ' "I'd rather end up in Whitby from doing too much." task was to' Says Mary Cannon about her family, "There's an old saying that goes you wouldn't give a nickel for a new baby but you wouldnt take a million to give any of the ones you have away."
