And in the hearts that loved her, she lives, and always will, Lo Cartwright Central School held its an- nval Science Fair last week for Junior classes with the following students winning individual awards for their entries. Front from left: Joey Muzik, Gari Oke, Tara Cearns, Shelley Frayer. Back row from left: Jeff Beddeme, Daryl Leatherdale, Scott Sut- ton, Karen Doyle, Vicki Schryburt and Jen- nifer Fletcher. Jason Kyte and Mike Stanley of Cart- wright P.S. were awarded first prize in the engineering division of the Durham Science Fair. The Fair was held recently at G.L. Roberts School and the boys' project was "Distillation of a Solar Still." Conception Fair 'a Science success April 28th proved to be a very successful day for the students of Im- maculate Conception Catholic School. The first Science Fair was held by the grade 5, 6, 7 and 8 students. Although there were many outstanding entries, only one from each category could be chosen for a first place ribbon. The categories were: biology, chemistry, geography, physics and mathematics -- biology was by far the most popular category with 32 projects in all. The Science Fair was a culmination of many months of hard work by both teachers and students. Mr. Daub, the Grade 7 and 8 teacher an- nounced the Fair way back in September. Some students began right away trying to decide upon topics and experiments. The class discussed the marketing scheme the judges would be using so that they would know what was ex- pected. The first step in the process was the preparation of a preliminary plan which was to be approved by the teacher. After ap- proval, a report con- sisting of at least 8 pages of written work, and 3 diagrams was to be presented. Then the display board was to be prepared. On April 27th, the students brought their completed assisgnments and set them up in the hall for judging. The judges were: Mr. Quinn, Mrs.-- Nash and Mr. Finan, and their job was a difficult one. When the judging was over the parents were invited to view the fair. Parents and friends were very impressed with the fair, especially considering it was our first. The winners will repre- sent our school at the Regional Science Fair which is to be held on May 7th at Denis O'Con- nor High School in Whit- by. This fair will be open to the public between 1:00 and "2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7. We congratulate all those who participated in the fdir, and wish the winners luck in the Regional Competition. We all felt that the Science Fair was a good experience for us and we realize that hard work and perseverance really do pay off. We are look- ing forward to an even better fair next year. Even the Grade "8 students will come back to the school to see it. UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA Rev. Glenn Jackson M.A.B.D.
