He looks pretty much like any other 18-year old who loves sports and actively plays: fastball and track and field. But Kevin has cystic fibrosis, a mysterious disease that strikes thousands of young people with varying degrees of severity. There is no known cure for the disease at this time, but it can be controlled through the use of drugs and other treatment. May is cystic fibrosis month in Canada, and in a recent interview with the Star, Kevin said there is a lot of mis- understanding and mis- conceptions on the part of the public about this disease. Partly this may be due to the fact the There's a lot to celebrate Prince Albert Area News by\Earline Armstrong Prince Albert sends out congratulations and the finest wishes to Jo- Ann and David Brown up in Peterborough, Ontario. They may never get out of hospital and the life expectancy of those with serious cases of C.F. is quite short. Others, like Kevin, who are not as severely stricken, can lead a relatively normal life- style, with a few limit- ations, of course. Medical science is not certain just what causes cystic fibrosis. It is hereditary, but may not show up for several generations. Kevin's parents and grand- parents do not have the disease, but his 16 year old sister does. It essentially strikes the lungs where there is a constant build-up of thick mucus, and the digestive system which is unable to break down food in the normal ways. For those with C.F., this means a daily diet of drugs to help the dig- estive system function; anti-biotics to help pre- vent lung and bronchial infections and vitamin supplements. In Kevin's case, he must take about 25 pills each day, eight with every meal. He must also have daily chest therapy to help break up the mucus clogs in the lungs and take inhala- tions to help keep the breathing passages dilated and clear. Kevin says that C.F. in him was diagnosed when he was three, but has only forced him into hospital once for any length of time. However, every three months, he goes to Sick Kids in 5 Year Annual Interest Toronto for a battery of tests to determine whether the drugs are still working properly and if the condition is getting worse. For those who are able, strenuous physical activity is encouraged because this helps breathing. Kevin enjoys fastball and will play competitive ball this summer as a memb er of the Port Perry Junior team. The high jump and javelin are favour- ite sports for him in track and field. Kevin says he some- times thinks about the fact he has C.F., but doesn't dwell on these thoughts. He's probably too busy with sports and school work. He recently moved 2 ) Port Perry from Scar- borough where he undertook speaking engagements about C.F. to school children and service clubs, especially the Kinsmen who con- tribute to the C.F. fund across Canada. Kevin says he would be more than willing to speak to similiar groups in the Scugog area about this disease in an effort to help foster better - public understanding. In the meantime, he is busy enough with sports and school work. He plans to attend univer- sity this fall and study towards a degree which will lead to a teaching career. Naturally, he hopes that someday medical science will know more about this disease, what causes it, and possibly even how to effectively cure it. 13a' MEMBER CANADA DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORP STERLING STERLING TRUST CORPORATION APPLY TO DON FORDER INSURANCE BROKERS LTD. 30 WATER ST., PORT PERRY - 985-8471 RATES SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE P & BLAWN ORNAMENTS for Planters - Bird Baths - Fountains - Lawn Furniture, Gnomes, Elves Many New Selections to Colour Your Lawn and Patio.
