The opening of the pickerel season attracted lots of fishing enthusiasts over the weekend with most having pret- ty good success. Ball hockey underway After a winter of poor ice fishing, pickerel fisherman attacked Lake Scugog with a vengeance on the week- end as the season re- opened for the popular Kawartha game fish. Marina operators said opening day on Sat- urday was very busy as fishing enthusiasts took advantage of the fine suminer weather, and the lake was almost as crowded Sunday when the weather turned cloudy and cool. And the fish were biting too, with many boats recording their limit of pickerel in the two and three pound size with a few a little larger. Some of the more pop- ular spots in the lake were off Washburn going to spina bifida research attracted 423 entrants who paid $5 each to enter. The larg- est fish taken in that tournament was 8 pounds, 13 ounces by Rino Poles of Toronto. The second tourna- ment held on Saturday and Sunday attracted 20 two-person teams who put an entry fee of $60 per boat with 90 percent of these fees returned in_ prize money. The second place team of Westall and Mulville recorded _a total 'catch of 19 pounds, six ounces and they won $228. The 20 teams took a total of 74 fish on Sat- Over 400 people entered in the 4th annual Pickerel Deerby for New Pickerel season opens with a flourish urday and all of them were released alive after weigh-in at the Port Perry Marina. The action seemed to improve a little bit on the Sunday as the teams took a total of 87 fish, with 76 of them released alive after the weigh-in. The largest fish recorded was five pounds, four ounces. Trophies for the first and second place teams were provided by Port Perry Marina. the Spina Bifida Association last Saturday on Lake Scugog. Winners of the days outing were, from left; 3rd- Dennis Gerrow of Pontypool with a 4 Ib. 6 oz. fish; Rino Poles of Toronto with a big 8 Ib. 13 oz. pickerel and 2nd place went to Wayne Ridley of Little Britain witha 5 Ib. 14 oz. pickerel. Proceeds from the $5.00 entry fees went to the Spina Bifida Assoc. Sunnybrae ladies golf news Despite bitterly cold winds between 25 and 30 brave ladies attended our Opening Day. It was good to see so many familiar faces and some new ones too. President Vera Brown outlined some of our activities for the season and intro- duced her executive. After fortifying our- selves with good -hot coffee we braved the cold for a few holes - now that's dedication! ! This year we will be hosting Summerlea Ladies and visiting Fox- head and Lindsay.
