wr O Da >. Crises Centre grant approved de Scugog and District Crisis Centre received a badly needed shot in the arm last Monday night when Scugog Council voted to approve a grant for the financially unstable organization. Since the centre was officially opened in 1980 Council has forwarded approximately $500 for its operation, usually in June or July. the money was approved earlier, however, because the organization was nearly destitute, with only $2.26 in the bank. Centre representative - Jeannette Morrow-Ross told councillors she had also asked for funding from Uxbridge and Brock Township coun: cils, approximately CRE TRL RT px SAL LPL SRT pos " g Set ACS yr A Sida AFR TN (OF ete fas ata Sih a Lob Aaa 2 3 3 EEA SAS ET Sa Ry RU HRT CLUB 8 BP \ The Rotary Club of Port Perry were entertained at their regular Wednesday meeting last week by Yuri Tagawa, 18, a Japanese exchange student (centre).<Seen in the photo with Yuri, are from left, Everett BARA. and Joanne Kerr, Sarah Forgan, and ex- change student from Australia who will be staying with the Kerr's in the fall, and Mrs. Jean Black who is presently the host family for Sarah. The centre survives mainly on donations from service clubs and individuals, as well as government grants. The biggest expenditure the organization has is the telephone bills, because women in crisis throughout the Region use the service and often are forced to call long distance. The centre also pays for an answering service as the office is not occupied on a full- time basis. Trudeau's letter *' The chairman of the Scugog branch of Operation Dismantle has called the Trudeau letter last week on the disarmament issue "insulting"'. Marg Wilbur said members of the local Operation Dismantle chapter met last week to discuss the much- publicized ppen letter from Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. The re- action "was quite neg- ----- ative," she said. YN Mrs. Wilbur said the letter was insulting by the suggestion in it that people whe are protest- ing the proposed cruise missile tests in Canada are '"'pro-Russian." The Trudeau letter, which was printed in major newspapers across Canada said some Canadians are "verging on hypocrisy". The group is opposed to the development of new nuclear weapons by all insulting" sides and in favour of balanced reductions in the world-wide arsenal of nuclear weapons. Mrs. Wilbur said the group is making plans to enter a float in the Ux- bridge Spring Water Days Parade early in June, and is thinking of setting up an inform- ation booth during the Western Weekend in Port Perry in August.
