Fifteen riders took part in the annual Hoskins Stables Open House on Sunday, featuring children from the Horseback Riding for the Handicapped program. Above, Squeeze the pony takes a carrot break with volunteer Diana Fletcher (standing), rider Lisa Veltri and her dad Mario. See story for details. Horseback Riding for the Handicapped Ponies teach children to 'walk' The boy was three and a half when he first came to Hoskin Stables, striken with cerebral palsy, allergies and an inability to walk. Or talk. Despite his hand- icaps, his instructors described him as brill- iant, able to sit down and read a newspaper but unable to read it out loud. Temper tantrums borne of sheer frustra- tien resulted on a regular basis. He was hard to deal with and stubborn as they come. Instructors at the stable started out play- ing bean bag games with him, strengthening his weakened muscles, giving him an outlet to express his frustration. His mother continued the exercises at home and within six months he was riding, his legs in the stirrups of a trusty pony, his temper mellowed. "Within a year he walked into the stables on his own power", says Shirley Cane, an instructor at Hoskin. ""That's the biggest thrill of all to see a child walk in the stable on his own." For the last five years or so, Hoskin Stables, just south of Blackstock on Durham Road 57, has been home for a riding program for the phys- ically disabled. The organization respon- sible for the creation of the program is called Horseback Riding for the Handicapped Assoc- iation of Durham Region. About 22 children between the ages of two and 22 are presently enrolled in the program, described by Mrs. Cane as being '""Therapeutic" riding instruction. The object of the school isn't to make each child a profession- al jockey or polo player, it's designed simply to provide therapy for the handicapped child as well as giving him or her a sport to enjoy. "It's not riding as you would know it yourself', Mrs. Cane says. "It's just a matter of doing something the child enjoys." Although there are a number of ponies at the stable used specifically for the program, the number of handicapped children who can partic- ipate at a time is limited due to a need for volunteers. Often up to three strong pairs of arms are necessary to hold a child in a saddle. Ponies are used in the program more often than horses strictly because of their size. Because they're short- er, volunteers don't have to reach so far up to keep the young riders from falling. Mrs. Cane says they aren't specifi- cally trained for the program but they are hand-picked for their gentle temperments. Last Sunday Hoskin Stables hosted an Open House, a chance for family and friends of the riders to see what pro- gress the children have been making. Similar in theme to any open house at any school, the event has been going on for the past five years. Also in its fifth year is the annual Ride-a-thon, the program's number one fundraising venture of the year. The 1983 edition will be held at the stables September 24 at 9 a.m. Riders must supply their own horse and be prepared to ride at their own pace through 25 km. of beau- tiful countryside on a marked trail with checkpoints along the way. When they return back to the stables from their trip, a delicious lunch will be waiting for them, courtesy of the Association. Last year nearly $5,000 was raised by the riders who participated and organizers are hoping for even more this year in order to keep the program going.
