The weather was warm and sunny, a perfect day to honour the two ladies who have contributed so much to the community in the eight years they have owned the Seagrave Country Store. And are now leaving. Gloria Wallace is heading east on Sept- ember 27th, the day the store ownership is offici- ally transferred to Robert Bruce. "I'll be up at four in the morning and head- ing down the road," she says with a grin. Dorothy Massel, her business partner in the store venture, will be' moving to her sister's house in Pickering for awhile. She isn't sure what she'll do after that except '"'take it easy." Local resident Roger Boyle says the commun- ity wanted to thank honoured by community Dorothy and Gloria for all the times they donat- ed time, money and goods to local teams, individuals, - and the park so they purchased shiny engraved plaques which were presented along with an emotional speech. First year awards went to Donna Kent, David But- ler, Robin Butler, Pam Butler, Krista Carr, and Connie Carr. Second year awards went to Paige Whyte, Craig Beacock, Ethan Lavereau and Kimberly Wray. Other awards were as follows: third year - Kris Lavereau, fifth year - Lloyd Short, seventh year- Melody Anne Sommerville, eighth year - Catherine Short, ninth year - Blair Beacock, tenth year - Lee Beacock, eleventh year - Robert Wann- amaker, Paul Wann- amaker, Ted Sturman, and fourtheenth year - Mark Sturman. Special awards for perfect attendance were award- ed to Lee, Blair and Craig Beacock and Lloyd Short. This past weekend Liz and Greg Smith, Anne Enzie and Ray Jobin joined with approxi- mately 2400 scout leaders at the Gilwell Reunion held in Blue Springs near Acton. The Scugog Youth Soccer Tournament took place on Saturday, September 10 with quite a few area children taking part. Peter King and Michael Williams were sure proud as their team 'Thompson Heat- ing' won the champion- ship after a couple of real "nail biter' games. Two shoot outs had to be held to determine the winning team in the Squirt division making it exciting right down to the wire for all the participants and spec- tators. Many thanks go to the coaches and organizers of the league who worked so hard to teach the youngsters skills and sportsman- ship. The UCW held its September meeting on Wed. Sept. 7 at the home of Mrs. Mildred Puckrin with 10 ladies attending. In charge of the meeting were Mrs. Stanley Venner and Mrs. Gertie Wannamaker. The opening hymn 'Lead Kindly Light' was followed by prayer. Scripture was read by Mrs. Mildred Puckrin and the topic given by Mrs. Stanley Venner was entitled Turn on Your Lights. Business was conducted by Mrs. Gertie Wannamaker and a substantial dona- tion was voted to the Board of Stewards. Plans were finalized for the lunch for the sale of Durwood's, Saturday and for the Rummage Sale to be held at the church on Oct. 1 at 9:30 a.m. We ask everyone to support this project. Everyone was re- minded to continue to save their cash register tapes for the Hospital Building Fund. Please save Port Perry IGA, Red and White and Uxbridge Zehrs grocery tapes and pass them on to a UCW member. Mrs. Fishley has several quilts ready to finish for the missions and ladies who are able to quilt are asked to help with a UCW quilt at Mrs. G. Wannamaker"s this week. Meeting closed with mizpah benedictions and all enjoyed a dainty lunch served by the hostess. The Seagrave United Church Women are sponsoring a rummage sale, white elephant and bake sale on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. in the church basement. Please bring donations of good used items to the church by September 28th. Dancersize regis- tration will be held on Sat. Sept. 17th from 10-12 at the Seagrave United Church. The teacher will be Louise Calder and lessons will be held on Wed. evenings at 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The class will run for 10 weeks and the fee is $25.00 The Good Neighbours Group will be holding their monthly meeting on Mon. Sept. 19 at 8:15 p.m. at Bonnie Bran- ton's. The Mariposa Ladies Group will be meeting at the home of Jan Addison on Wed. Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The topic for this meeting is "Dealing with Stress". Both ladies groups extend a warm welcome to new members. Heather Kellington became an aunt again on Sept. 3 with the birth of Laura Catherine Ash- ley Rose Dewar, sister It was "hot" Turkey Trot time in Port Perry Sat. Sept. 10 as the seagrave Ladies Turkey Power team won 5 out of 5 games. They took their league championship, despite the hot sun and stiff competition from Saintfield, Greenbank, Manilla Steelers and the Port Perry Gems and Blues. Heather Kellington wonders if someone will search out her old black cauldron. It seems two years ago this August someone borrowed it for a cornroast. Despite the fact it has a welded crack in it, Heather would like it back since it was a 5th anniversary present from her hus- band, Bruce. If its in your garage, please give her a call and she'd be glad to pick it up. There will be an Open Meeting of the Group Committee on Tuesday, Sept. 20th at 7:30 in the Sunday School Room. All parents of children involved in the scouting movement are asked to attend and lend your support. A paper drive is scheduled for Sat. Sept. 17 and members of the village and subdivision areas are requested to leave their tied and bundled papers at the end of their driveways. In an effort to conserve time and energy could those living further afield, please contact Don Anstey at 985-2006 to arrange a pickup. It seems the Williams "back to school party" is becoming a tradition as Michael and Ryan hosted another party this year. A few of the boys' classmates and friends were invited for a barbeque and we all enjoyed the get-together Seagrave Minor Ball Teams met at Mec- Donald's in Oshawa for their end of season party. Dorothy Massell of the Seagrave Store hosted the event and after lunch the young- sters were presented with medallions. Tommy Durwood, who was the youngest player present, was chosen to give Dorothy a rose and a plaque from the teams. A representative group dropped in at the store following the party to present Gloria Wallace with her plaque and rose. There was a really good turnout of children, parents, and coaches and eveyone had a super time. On Sunday, Sept. 11, the farewell picnic held in Seagrave Park for Gloria and Dorothy was a huge success. Many friends and neighbours came to bid farewell and offer best wishes to these two gals who are 'so well liked and re- spected in and around Seagrave. The relaxing friendly atmosphere was representative of the relationship that developed between the community and two of its favorite members. Good luck to both of you and all -the best in the future.
