a Welcome English visitors Ashburn Area News by Mrs: E. Heron We welcome Amy and Jack Trebble from Harrogate, . England. They will be visiting with Mel and Mary Briscoe and their daughter, Kathy during the month of Sept- ember. Many pleasant outings-are planned for their stay. We hope the nice weather holds out and that they really enjoy their visit in Canada. Rita and Jack David- chuck and family, Mathew, Chantel and Stephen have returned to their home after an enjoyable trip to Prince Edward Island and other interesting places down east. A very happy 89th birthday is wished for Mrs. Myrtle Fisher who with her family and many friends enjoyed a happy party Sunday afternoon at Fairview Lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mitchell of Deep River spent the weekend with relatives here in the area. Mr. and Mfs. Ray Porter, Sharman and Glen recently visited Ray's father and family in Nova Scotia. Mr. and Mrs. E. Heron spent a few days last week with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Drew Leaper and Ian of Miss- issauga. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Downs are building a lovely new addition onto their house this summer. We welcome Rev. McEntyre back from his holidays. He conducted the morning worship at Burns Church last Sun- day. Chantel and Stephen and Mathew David- chuck sang a lovely number, an arrange- ment of solos and re- corder accompanied by their mother, Reta. It was much appreciated by the congregation. The scriptures were read by Barbara Humphrey and Jack Davidchuck. Rev. McEntyre took his text from St. Luke, about the man who tore down his barns to build bigger ones and that night he died. Our personal riches toward God and our life in Christ is the only thing of real value. A very appropriate message for Labour Day Sunday. The Ashburn group of the W.M.S. met last Wednesday evening at the home of Jean Mc- Entyre in Port Perry with a good attendance. Bernie Gardner, pres- ident, conducted the meeting and Lois Daw opened with an interest- ing devotion period. The study was given by Catherine Humphrey and she told the story of William Booth of the Salvation Army and of the good work they are doing in Canada and around the world. The next meeting will be the annual fall Thank offering meeting and . will take the form of a musical evening to be held in the church on Sunday morning Oct- ober 1st, everyone is welcome. We welcome Mr. and Mrs. Ray Engleton and son, Jeffrey home from their trip to England, Scotland and Wales. They had good weather and a good holiday. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 13, 1983 -- 35 Brooklin Horticulture show Following its own tradition of other years, the Brooklin Hor- ticultural Society held a very successful "An- nuals" Show on August 24, with 77 entries received. The meeting was open- ed by President Lyla Allan who welcomed members and guests and made the announcement that Veronica Colangelo, one of our very talented members, will conduct a workshop in flower design, in the morning, afternoon and evening of September 20. Anyone in- terested should call Veronica at 655-3869. Valerie Hundert in- formed the meeting that the junior members of the society were respon- sible for the painting and planting of all the attrac- tive barrels on Baldwin Street. They are to be commended for doing such a fine job and a special thanks goes to Valerie for her untiring efforts in working with this group of young people. Ken Brown introduced the speaker for the even- ing, Marjorie Mason of Pineridge Nurseries, whose topic was Geraniums and who rais- ed over 200 varieties of this plant. Ms. Mason brought several Geraniums with her, varying in colour, shape and size and as well showed slides on the sub- ject. She spoke with authority and humour and proved to be one of the best speakers we have 'heard in many years. The winners of the flower show were an- nounced by Penny Hoskin, as follows: Best Specimen Gladiolus- Gib Marlow, award donated by Brooklin IGA; Best Decorative- Doris Marlow, a silver serving tray to be held one year, donated by the Brooklin Horticultural Society; Best Specimen Flower- Mary Housego, prize given by Cullen Gardens; Best Specimen Vegetable, also won by Mary Housego and donated by Brooklin Flour Mill. A delicous lunch was served by Betty Van Buuren. Corn plowed under As much as 900 acres of sweet corn across Durham Region could be plowed under because farmers cannot combine fast enough to keep up with the fast-maturing crop. Brian Hall, rural organization and ser- vices representative with the agriculture ministry office, said that the ex- tremely hot weather has caused the corn to mature faster than com- bines can get around. "We might have to miss 500 acres in a nor- mal year but with all this hot weather, the corn's just coming along too fast," he said. Hall said some of the missed sweet corn could be saved for cattle feed, but that most farmers will likely plow their crop under. Yields are down on all corns this year, Hall also reported, with field corn and silage corn down bet- ween 15 per cent and 20 per cent. ----ASH WOODSTOVES DURHAM STOVE & CHIMNEY Wood Stoves Fireplace Inserts Complete Line of Chimneys & Accessories 1-416-985-2808 r WELCOME TO ...
