That was the heart of the message delivered last week by Peter Mason, past president of the Ontario Real Estate Association as he addressed members of the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board to kick off "Private Prop- erty Week," which runs from October 2 to 10 in Canada. Reminding his audience that more than 60 percent of all Canad- ians are property owners, Mr. Mason said there "is no better way to balance private rights and public needs than incorporating pro- perty rights in the new Constitution". Mr. Mason said the reason such rights are not in the Constitution now is because the issue has been "a political football" with the federal parties in Ottawa. yy SHOULDERS o 450 ml + 100 SUPER ml Bonus SIZE (550 mi 111) *4.19 BRUTON"S I.D.A. In connection with Private Property Week, the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board (which includes Scugog Township) will be pre- senting a public inform- ation and awareness program. Debentures (From page 1) projects. Both Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor and Lawrence Malcolm voted in favour of the Port Whitby and Newcastle projects, noting that if they don't proceed right now, the costs will increase as federal and provincial grants available at this time could be lost. Mayor Taylor said he agreed with assurances from Whitby Mayor Bob Attersley that putting the services in, would spur development in that area. He also noted there has been a sewage pro- blem in South Whitby for several years which is causing environmental concerns. Port flower? (From page 1) the better chance of drawing tourists. "I don't think we're go- ing to attract any in- dustry here," he told the councillors. "The only in- dustry we're going to get here is tourism." According to Mr. Smith's statistics, tourism is the second largest industry in Canada, with billions earned each year. "I think the whole council agrees that tourism is important," Mayor Jerry Taylor said, "We have tried in the past to keep our parks respectable. Inrecent letters to the editors of several area newspapers, Mr. Smith has written about the use of flower barrels as ashtrays, garbage bins, footpaths and public toilets. He also express- ed his disgust with people who bring their dogs to public parks and don't bother to stoop and scoop. He is hoping a flower symbol like the geranium would inspire pride in people to look after public parks as well as their own gardens. Mayor Taylor said the flower idea would be brought up in a future planning meetings. HELPFUL HINTS Keep onions from growing and becoming soft - wrap individually in foil. UXBRIDGE - Ted Murphy, a former Uxbridge boy, is leaving his job as president of Local 222 of the United Auto Workers to take a position as service representative for the UAW. Murphy started working at General Motors in 1956 and has been head of Local 222 since 1978. BEAVERTON - Three students were admitt- ed to hospital after their school bus was hit by a gravel truck on Highway 12, north of Beaverton last Wednesday afternoon. The school bus was stopped to let off passengers when a gravel truck swerved to miss the bus, but a trailer he was pulling caught the back of the bus. Driver of the truck, Robert Cockburn, 49, of Oshawa was charged with dangerous driving. STOUFFVILLE - Use of the strap, as a form of discipline in York Region schools, is now a thing of the past. Trustees voted 12-6 in favour of banning corporal punishment at a recent board meeting. In presenting arguments against the strap, Trustee John Myers stressed that the strap as a form of discipline is outdated, and the argument that it should be kept because it works doesn't make it right. "It's a punishment of the past," he said. CLAREMONT - The last time Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jenkinson Sr. saw their Canadian - Aerobatic Champion son, he flew over their house giving them a small exhibition and wiggled his wings. Frank Jenkinson Jr., 44, was killed Sunday last when the Pitts Special airplane he was flying crashed into a wooded area off Highway 48 near Sutton. At the time of the crash he was flying his friend's single-seated plane in order that pictures of different stunt maneuvers could be taken from the ground.
