Mrs. Edith Davis has returned after a 3 week trip to England and Holland and passing thro' Belgium and France. Mr. and Mrs. Morven Hughes of Port View Beach have returned after a 2 week vacation to the East Coast to visit relatives. The "Head" UCW meets this Wednesday at the home of Alva Thompson. The "Grace'" UCW meets this Wednesday evening also at the home of Madeline Cawker. The Friendship UCW will meet Wednesday, October 12 at 1 p.m. at the home of Janet Campbell. There will be a guest speaker from the hydro. On Monday evening of Sept. 26, the women of the "Head" UCW planned a surprise party for Alva Thomp- son's special birthday to bring her best wishes and show appreciation -_for her several years of helpfulness in the community. The follow- ing Sunday many family members arrived at the Thompson home for a family dinner party and _ to convey Best Wishes. If the early pioneers could have returned to the '"Head Memorial" Island Church on Sun- day evening, their hearts would have swelled with pride and satisfaction to see the 123 year old church built with their hard work, refreshed with paint, restored furnishings, decorated for the Thanksgiving season, filled with worshippers of their descendants and new area residents. They would have been cheered with the lusty singing of the old familiar hymns and agreed with the mess- ages delivered by Miss Beatrice McLean, Rev. E. Linstead, Dr. Matthew Dymond and Norman Watson through prayer, Scrip- ture, Sermons and Solo ("If I could Help Some- body"). They would never have seen such a choir as the members of the Lake Scugog Shores Historical Choir (dress- ed in period costumes) and accompanied by Mrs. Eva Hunter, Geo. Freeman and Bob Cawker as instrument- alists. . The following social period is also antici- pated as a time for old friends and acquaint- ances to renew friend- ship. We are very grateful to Mrs. Hazel Slemmon, Mrs. Roxana Webster, Norman Watson and the "Head" UCW who make it possible to carry on this traditional annual service when we can show appreciation to our forefathers. It is rather surprising that many descendants still living on the Island never avail themselves of this beautiful occasion right in their midst. Awareness week Addiction Awareness Week, to be held Oct- ober 23 to 29th through- out Durham Region, will focus in on the nature and extent of addiction problems in the area, pinpoint the existing resources available for the education and treat- ment of addiction pro- blems, and locate gaps in services for persons with addictions-related problems. A number of events are being organized in each township in the region to help direct public attention on addiction problems and services. Some of the activities being organized for AAW include discussion groups for seniors, students, or any other interested people; liter- ature and poster dis- plays in shopping malls with resource people to answer questions on addiction; plus various other activities includ- ing the possibility of a blue-grass dance night in Port Perry.
