| | Purple Hill 'astronaut' produces space model Maybe, way down deep inside, an astro- naut lurks in the heart of Bill Lishman. First, more than a decade ago, he built an amazing replica of the Apollo II Lunar Landing Module out of aluminum so the free-spirited Blackstock sculptor would have a place to get away from it all. Somewhere along the line the Japanese got wind of his creation and offered Bill $30,000 for it last Spring. He accept- ed, of course, and the module was shipped to Japan for the country's Space Exhibition in Tokyo and Osaka. Well according to Bill, the Japanese liked the lunar module so much they asked him to build a space arm. And before you could say Neil Armstrong, Bill set to work. As it turned out, the space arm's completion was too late for the i £3 a RRL Japanse exhibition, but not too late for the National Research Council. Next week the finished space arm will be transported to the National Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa for perman- ent display. Not bad for a guy whose microlite flying is the closest he's ever come to outer space. # The model is an exact aluminum and wood replica of Canadarm, the Candian space arm which goes on each space shuttle. Like a fork lift working with a big truck, the space arm is able to load and unload the shuttle, reaching into space as the shuttle is orbiting. "Without the arm', Bill says, "the shuttle is useless." Conveniently, the research council was lacking a model of the Canadarm and paid $20,000 commission to Gk 5 4 5d Bill for his model. With the help of Richard van Heuvelen, Doug Potts and Marilee Orser, all from the Scugog area, the space arm model was built and then finally wrapp- ed up in cloth courtesy of Paula Lishman and her assistants. The finished model is exact- ly the same size as the original, 51 feet long, but weighs much less. Where the original is made with carbon fibre, Bill's is made of card- board. When the model pre- views in Ottawa, there'll be a grandiose ribbon snipping ceremony, hopefully with astro- nauts Robert Cripp and Sally Ride participat- ing, as well as other assorted big wigs. And they'll all be there to check out the results of what Bill Lishman calls 'The Purple Hill Space Program." } Ed ® Above, a photograph of the Canadian space arm at work on an American space shuttle in orbit. That's the arm bent like an elbow on thie left side of the shuttle. Fares FRU 5 Codd ey ye LA ty Eo NE mas mae eae Le ae . Yes, it's that time of the year again, Commence- ment!| A time to reflect on the years gone by; your truimphs and failures, and it is also a time for getting re- acquainted with friends with whom you may have lost contact. It's also a time to re-visit your old teachers who you have missed so much. Commencement 1983 will be on Friday, Nov- ember 4th at 8:00 p.m. All last years grade 12 and 13's, this years grade 13's and all recipients of awards as well as parents, relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend the ceremonies. On to school news: Last Friday's Hall- oween sock hop was a tremendous success! A good time was had by all. John MacKelvey can take full praise for his superb job of supply- ing the music for this event. The costumes that a lot of the students wore helped us all to get in a great mood for the Halloween parties that weekend. The Port High Music Department fundraiser of orange and grapefruit sales is over, and was a moderate success. They made a profit of approx- imately $2,500, about the equivalent of last years profit. These funds are going towards our music department for purchasing of micro- phones, stands, sheet music drums (maybe), trips and other expenses, The writing club is working on a booklet called "Verticle Horizons". It will con- tain work done by the writer's club in the form of short stories and poetry. If you are interested in joining this club, contact Mr. Brandon. October has been a great month, lets hope they're all this good. Bye for now - more news next week from Lisa. HELPFUL HINTS Cranberries grind very neatly when frozen. Wash berries, pat dry and freeze in plastic bag (above). The space arm model will be displayed in a museum in Ottawa.
