22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. November 1, 1983 Lots of action for local broomball league The league was involved in lots of action this past weekend, as C&B travelled to a tournament in the town of Thornton where they were in three games. In their first game Sat- urday morning, they dumped the Barrie Stars by a 3-0 score. They walloped the Molson Canadians on, Saturday afternoon 8-0 before they returned home for the night. At 1:00 Sunday afternoon they had their chances against K. Winter San- itation, but came up short and finished with a 1-0 loss. In regular league play in town Sunday, Bea- cock's downed Emmer- sons 3-0 to take a 4 point lead in the battle for third place in the local loop. It took until mid- way through the first before Blackstock got on the board when Tom Wotten fed Rick Alpe in front of the Emmerson's the second Laval Poulin set up Wayne McGuigan who fired the ball between the feet of goaler Mike Haines. With 3:49 to play, Poulin finished off the a pass- ing play set up by 'the digging of Ron Redman. With 1:11 to play both teams received a pen- alty, and Emmersons pulled Haines for the extra attacker, but this tactic was nullified by a penalty with 37 seconds left, enabling Rick Mc- Lean to pick up his first shut out of the season. The next game gave number one C&B a lot of fits as they squeaked out a 4-3 win over Brians with 1:04 to go in the game. It took just 28 seconds before Dave Dickson got C&B start- ed on an unassisted effort. Brians event- ually tied it up on a goal by Finley Peeters aided by Doug Doyle, but before the end of the first C&B had gone goal. Rob Evans assisted Dan Taylor enhancing C&B's lead by two. Before the period had ended, Brian's were coming back as they pulled to within one on a goal by Doyle from Joe De- Philipes. Forty seconds into the final frame, Ken St. Amant on a lone effort tied the score with time running out. Taylor set up Ashbridge for the one that broke the proverbial camel's back in regard to the feelings of the Brian team. The final game of the day saw Utica devastate Oddfellows with the first double digit score of the year by 11-0, The offence was led by the three goal performance of Chester Down and Mike Mitchell's two goals and one assist. The addition of Alex Shelemba and, Tom Carroll didn't hurt either as they picked up three points between the two of them. Mitchell got the ball rolling as he connected on his first with help from Ian Down. Before the first period had ended, Utica had built up a 4-0 lead as Ian Down netted one, aided by Keith Ellicot and Murray Down, and Chester connected. Carroll and Mitchell combined before Chester Down got two in a row with brother Ian picking up one assist, In the final five minutes, Shelemba and Mitchell clicked, then Mitchell from Bruce Smith, Aldon Smith unassisted and Bruce Smith assist- ing Shelemba complet- ed the rout. Oddfellows are in some trouble this season, as they have lost their goaltender and two defénsemen in the last few weeks deleting their ranks. Don Car picked up his third shut out leaving him one behind C&B"s Keith Fraser. Atoms win home opener On Friday, Oct. 28, 1983 the Malmont Farms Atoms hosted Markham in Port's third league game but their first league game at home. It was a clean game with only one penalty going to the visitors. Port opened the scoring in the second period when Jan Heyes beat the Markham goalie in a low back hand shot after Mark Andrews had won the face-off in'th Markham end. Six minutes later Port took a 2 to 0 lead whe: Mark Andrews scored from teammate Greg Fitzgerald and Jan Heyes. Early in the third Markham got within one of Port and the score stayed 2 to 1 until Markham pulled their goalie for an extra attacker but Mark Andrews fired a clear shot off the boards, which Jan Heyes picked up at centre ice and waltzed in and scored in the empty net. Port won 3tol. Excellent goal tend- ing at both ends of the rink kept the score down. Next home game is Friday, Nov. 4 at 8:00 p.m. vs. Whitby. Come out and cheer us on. On Oct. 24, 1983 the Atoms travelled to * Stouffville and came away 5-3 losers to the Atom Clippers. Stouff- ville grabbed an early 2 goal lead in the first period but by the middle of the period Port had tied it up on goals by Brad Moase assisted by Jason Cochrane pho Mark Andrews set up by line mates Greg Fitz- .gerald and Jan Heyes. But Port Atoms couldn't hold the Clippers down and Stouffville scored three more and the first period ended 5-2. There was no scoring by either team in the second period although both teams had good chances but couldn't capitalize. Port got the 'only goal of the third period when Greg Fitz- gerald dug the puck out of the corner and set up Jan Heyes in the slot With three straight wins Port Perry's Goreski Insulation Bantam A's are off to another very impressive start. They are undefeated in their first 3 league games. Port has outscored their opponents 34 to 3. In the first game Port was up against Pickering Hockey League and defeated them 8-0. Scoring for Port was Dave Burnett 2 goals and 1 assist; Dave Culbert 2 goals, Steve Durham 1 goal, 2 assists; John Harman with a goal, Brad " Menzies 1 goal, 1 assist; Chris Scura, Rob Baker, Greg Stapleton, Brad Traves, and Mike Gibson all with 1 assist. Steve whalen recorded assists; Dan Vernon 2 goals, 1 assist; Rob -Baker 1 goal, 1 assist; Dave Culbert 2 goals, 1 assist; John Harman with a goal; Brad Menzies 3- assists; Scott Feasby 2 assists; Mark Barkey 2 assists and Bob Goble 1 assist. Kevin Cearns played well between the poles. - In the third game Port played outstanding by defeating Ajax 16-1. Scoring for Port was Mark Barkey 3 goals, 1 assist; Dave Burnett 3 goals, 2 assists; Dave Culbert 2 goals, 2 assists; Rob Baker 2 then he fired it home before the Stouffville goalie had a chance to move. It was a good game andthe boys think Port will take them next time. The Bantam A's have an outstanding coaching staff consist- ing of Clark Menzies (coach), Stan Feasby (assistant Coach), and Doug scott (Manager).
