November 15, 1983 -- 31 "lag Saved , ANN Fale Laie hie St i didn i Viola Johnson of Manchester She died September 24 in Port Perry Comm- unity Hospital after a lengthy bout with cancer. She was born at High Point (just south of Port Perry) on June 4, 1899, the youngest daughter of Coleman and Maretta Wilson. She had four older sisters, Alma, Effie, Ada and Leta and a younger brother Ernie. All except Alma predeceased her. Their mother died when Viola was only two and one- half years old. Her uncle Charlie and Aunt Jenny Lamb raised her along with their own children Hattie and Fred. She often looked back with fond memories of the days when she was growing up. Her father remarried and she had two half-brothers, Gordon and Harley. She attended school at Manchester and Port Perry. She was an enthusiastic student of music under the capable direction of a beloved teacher, Miss Ball, A. T.C.M. For many years Viola played the organ and assisted with the music program in the Manchester United Church. She was instru- mental in bringing the Carolina Singers to Ont- ario in the thirties. This talented troupe of South- ern Musicians, some with parents who were plantation slaves, sang and played numerous performances in the area including full houses in what is now Town Hall '83. Viola, as the church organist, invited talent- ed people to participate in the music of the church. She encouraged young people to partici- pate and to develop their talents. Also seasoned performers such as the radio (before TV days) bari- tone soloist Stephen Gleecoff sang to her accompaniment during church services at Man- chester. His popularity in the local area spread and he sang in Scugog and Port Perry on a number of occasions. Many in the area will remember when Viola hosted in her home weekly guitar lessons with 35 students and two teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Bell (who later became known for the Leslie Bell Singers of radio fame). Viola accompanied the Gospel singer recording artist Bob Heayn during his local performances. She enjoyed his music very much. She was comm- unity minded and supported community and church activities with dedicated partici- pation. The Ladies Aid and Womens Mission- ary Society and in recent years the U.C.W. were areas of her activ- ity. She served on the Town Hall Community Centre Committee and was an active member of the Hospital auxil- iary. She wrote the Manchester News for the Port Perry Star. In 1922 she married Frank Johnson, a local boy and they farmed just south of Man- chester. On October 12, 1982 Viola and Frank proudly celebrated their 60th wedding anniver- sary. She had a profound sensitivity about the welfare of others, the gift of kindness and patience and the insight to see the very best in people. She is survived by her husband, Frank, their children and their spouses, Wesley at home, Doreen and Jim Torrens in Mississauga, Harley and Lois (nee Rollins) in Fenwick and six grandchildren and their spouses Ken and Colleen (nee Mclvery) Torrens, Toronto; Ronnie Torrens and Lee Anne Torrens of Ottawa; Diane, Greg and Julie Johnson of Fenwick also a sister Alma Muir of Toronto, a half-brother Harley of Windsor and a great number of nieces and nephews. Services were held in the Wagg Funeral Home in Port Perry and Viola was laid to rest in Kendalls Cemetary in Utica on September 26, 1983. Three ministers officiated at the funeral services, Miss Beatrice McLean, Rev. Charlie Clark and Jim Young, a former lay preacher of Manchester Church for a number of years. All spoke highly of the deceased stating that she spent her life help- ing others and that her place would be hard to fill. Judge Robert H. Brown, Welland, described his Grand cow, A Brookview Tony Chari- ty as a tremendous Five year old (14) displaying size, strength, dairyness and a great udder. Typ- ing in well was the se- cond smooth Five year old and Reserve Grand Champion Female, Bond Haven Nugget Presti owned by Bond Haven. Farm Ltd., Beeton. Presti was also the reci- pient of the Romandale Farms Trophy for best animal bred by exhibitor.
