| Producers air government beef (From page 7) meat industry January 5, the Ontario Cattle- men's Association re- sponded with a state- ment outlining several areas of serious con- cern. * One area of concern is what will happen to a marketing agency is set up. : They also expressed concern about the three- man task force appoint- ed by the provincial government to come up with marketing agency recommendations over the next six months. The task force members "lack of broad exper- ience in beef cattle marketing," says the statement issued by the Association January 11. The Association has asked that the task force membership be doubled with two more reps from the beef producer segment and one from the Livestock Markets Association. Another area of con- cern for the Association is the government announcement to increase the Ontario cow herds from the pre- sent 360,000 to 480,000, even though beef con- sumption in Ontario has their own Association if After 30 years running his own general wholesale business, Port Perry resident turned the keys over to the Mayor of Ux- bridge, Bill Ballinger. Lloyd figured it was time for he and wife to retire, so he sold his "business, which distributes souvenir items, straw hats, greeting cards, gifts and toys to stores in the area. Bill Ballinger spotted his ad in the Toronto Star and promptly gave Lloyd a call. "I've been looking for a small business since | sold the restaurant (Crandell's) to keep my mind busy with something other than politics." He says he won't leve his mayor's job and will run his new enterprise with the help of his family. L SEER YES RN AES Faia PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. January 17, 1984 -- 13 declined 20 per cent in the past six years. "No producers would oppose the thought of having more beef cows in Ontario, however, most feel that expansion of production in Ontario should be based on pro- fitability as opposed to artificial incentive," says the statement from the Cattlemen's Assoc- iation. Mr. Bagshaw express- ed concern that increas- ing the number of beef cows would create over- supply and lead to a further softening of prices for producers. The announcement by the provincial govern- ment to set up the marketing agency des- cribed it as "a clearing house system for all slaughter cattle and all - sales transactions tak- ing place through the agency.' It is part of a provin- cial plan to spend $62 million over the next five years on the red meat industry in Ont- ario. Included are such things as increasing calf production, improved efficiency, expanded feeding programs, better féncing and more technical assistance and support for producers. * Let the fire burn out before you retire for the night. 5 Year Annual Interest 1%" MEMBER CANADA DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORP.
