EERE TREE ww SER TIE. 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. January 17, 1984 Snipers rusty as Port Hope salvages 4-4 tie by John B. McClelland Failure to cash in on numerous good scoring chances cost the Port Perry MoJacks a victory over the Port Hope Panthers Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. The MoJacks had at least a half dozen clear breakaways plus . several other point- blank shots at the Pan- ther net, but had to settle for a 44 draw as the visitors netted the tying goal with just 44 seconds to play in the game. While a single point is better than a loss, it was a disappointing outcome for the MoJacks as the team now finds itself in fifth place in the Central Junior C standings, two points back of the Little Britain Merchants. Trying to snap out a disastrous slump that has dragged on for several weeks, the Mo- Jacks played well enough to win Sunday night and in fact had leads on two occasions of 3-0 and 4-1. /[#58R) - Candid Weddings - {/ (Ch - PHONE 985-7086 REKKER PHOTOGRAPHY They could have put the game away several times, but MoJack shooters were either missing the net or firing the puck into the pads or glove of Panther goalie Guy Foster. The tying goal for the Panthers came at 19:16 with the netminder out for an extra attacker as Brian Giroux beat Clay Lovering from the side of the net. Last Thursday night, the Panthers on home ice handed the MoJacks a 9-7 defeat, their seven- th in the last eight games. But Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, it looked like things might be turning around for the MoJacks as they built a 3-0 lead by the mid-point of the second. point on goals by Brian Nicholson, Brian Mikk- elsen and Wayne Snodden. Clay Lovering looked sharp in the MoJack nets and had a shut-out going for nearly two periods before he was beaten on a long, screened shot from the left blue line. At 3:10 of the third, Glen McKay gave the MoJacks a 4-1 lead as he converted passes from Scott Wallace and Dave Rockbrune. But the Panthers got one back at 4:49 and then began to apply pressure which resulted in a goal at 16:05 to make it 4-3. That set the stage for the tying goal in the final minute, and the MoJacks left the ice a frustrated and dis- appointed group of hockey players. Last Thursday night in Port Hope, the Mo- Jacks at one point were trailing 8-2 before they came alive in the third period with five goals, four of them by forward Scott Wallace. But the Panthers added one in the final minute to hang on to the victory. Brian Nicholson with a pair and Todd Wilbur with one were the other marksmen for the Mo- Jacks who had just 12 skaters and two goalies. When things are going badly for a team, Lady Luck takes a vacation as newcomer Marvin MacNeil who looked impressive in his first two games, came down _ with appendicitis last week and may be lost for the rest of the season. Gord Rogers re- injured a charley-horse in Thursday's game and it's not known when he'll be back on the blue line. 179 CASIMIR ST. Mike Ryan also returned to action on the blue line after being out since the all-star game Boxing day with a shoulder injury. After-a long a frust- rating losing streak which began early in December, the MoJacks find themselves now with their back against the wall. They are in fifth place, two points behind the Little Britain Mer- chants with each team PPHS sports report having four games to play. If they stay in fifth spot, they'll meet the first place Bowmanville Eagles in the best of five opening round of the playoffs. The MoJacks are idle until this coming Sun- day night when they host the Cobourg Cougars at the Scugog Arena with game time at 7:30 P.M. Midgets snap the losing streak by Amy Ware On Jan. 9 the midget junior and senior guys basketball teams hosted Dwyer H.S. in a triple- header. The midgets were looking to snap a long losing streak. They played a great game, coming out on top 45-41. Top scorers were Dave Burnett and Nick Van- derzwet. The juniors played a slow paced game (something they're not used to) and couldn't seem to get their shots - hitting. Dwyer surpass- ed them by a score of 45-38. Top scorers were Lee Wilbur with 13 points and Darryl Musselman 9 points. The seniors played the hottest senior team in Durham Region (Dwyer Saints). The juniors on the other hand, had their offensive intimidated by glass back boards. Al- though the defense held Henry to only 37 points, it wasn't enough as Port was defeated 37-22. The seniors played an exceptional game but again glass back boards affected their shots. The final score was Port 38 and Henry 53.
