Australian teen says goodbye to Canadian Rotary Club friends Sarah Forgan will never forget 1983. The 17-year old said goodbye last week to a year living and travell- ing in Canada. And travel she did. From skiing weekends lot of friends and return- in Quebec to Niagara ed Friday to her native Falls, to Blue Jay and Australia after spending Argo games in Toronto, a year in Canada as the guest of the Port Perry Rotary Club in part of an international student exchange program. Last Wednesday even- ing, Sarah related some of her experiences to local Rotarians, and while she no doubt was looking forward to see- ing her family again, it was obvious that Sarah thoroughly enjoyed the once-in-a lifetime opportunity to spend a 2 med sa 9 pieces of golden chicken mily french fries ads of your choice CHICKEN & SEAFOOD 136 WATER ST. Rushmore, Wash- ington, D.C., and of course the nation's capital, Ottawa. In fact, Sarah prob- ably saw more of Canada last year than most Canadian have and she has an interest- ing series of slides to take back to Australia She said last wee that the highlight of her year in Canada was a tour last summer with 96 other exchange students from 22 count- ries through Western Canada and the Rockies, incfuding a the world- famous Calgary Stam- pede. As Sarah was meeting Canadians and dis- covering this country, she was of course asked a lot of questions about her native land. "Do I have a pet Kangaroo? Do Austral- ians eat Kuala bears? When did 1 learn English? What lan- guage do we speak in Australia?' were some of the more humourous questions Sarah was asked. During her year in Canada, Sarah stayed with four local Rotary families, and she joked about the Royal treat- ment she received from all of them. "The cooking was Chesterfield Suites price RNITURE WetEEN FuRmI 1255181 great, so good that by last August, I just had to go on a diet, but I'm afraid that didn't last very long,' she told the meeting. In between all the travelling and acting as a good-will ambassador for her own country, Sarah attended Port Perry High School taking such courses as computers, arts and drama. She finished high school in Australia before arriving in Canada last January and will start training to be a nurse this March. Her father is a physic- ian in Adelaide. One of the lasting memories for her will be Christmas Day and the bitter cold of minus 20 Celcius. With the sea- sons reversed "down under," Sarah said tha Christmas Day at home the mercury can climb to as high as 40 C. So it was quite a change, getting a real taste of Canadian winter. Following her address and presentation of slides at the Rotary meeting last week, Sarah was the recipient of several gifts from the club, including a beauti- ful Eskimo soap-stone carving. -------- a0 0a AA AA A A AA 0444440440404 4 DDO 5 OH.0.5.0.0.0.0.0 0 0 a SE HOH OHOO.0.0.0.0 0 4 MAA A A 4 04444 44 AlL SERVICES: Tues., January 3rd through Saturday, February 18th, 1984.
