Funds raised by the event will go to- wards multiple sclerosis research, the disease with no cure that affects the body's central ner- vous system. Sponsored by the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, the Read-a-thon encourages children to read as many books as possible before February 17. Their sponsors pledge a certain amount of money per book and funds must be collected before February 24. Participants can read any book they haven't read before (excluding picture books), which Japanese firm to build plant in Uxbridge Durham Region Plan Amendment for a major new manufactur- ing plant in the south- west corner of Uxbridge Township. The application had been submitted by Tokai Canada Ltd., a Japanese based com- pany, which hopes to build a 20,000 square foot plant for parts assembly and distrib- ution of disposable lighters. : Once completed, the plant will provide about 30 new jobs and add to the industrial assess- ment base of Uxbridge Township and the on. The official plan application calls for re- designated 77 acres of land on Regional Road 30 from major open space to industrial- recreation use. The pro- perty is currently being - used as a seasonal trail- er park. It is estimated that the cost of constructing the new plant will be in the neighbourhood of $1 million. If the official plan amendment process and subsequent re-zoning are completed on sch- edule, construction could get underway this fall for an opening in the spring of 1985. Although the Read-a- thon will boost reading skills and help the MS Society, students' bigg- est incentive could be the prizes awarded to top readers. Official sponsor Michael Jack- son has provided full- colour posters of him- self, but there will be also stuffed Mystery Sleuth dogs, T-Shirts, sun visors, backpacks and a Reader's Digest Atlas for the top school in the area.
