TA-12 MANCHESTER | \ _ duce uek (CHRYSLER | CHRYSLER! RCs, We've got H- Jitters comes to Latcham Centre Jitters is an ironic yet totally appropriate play for the first production of newest theatrical company. 'Playwright David French's most successful work to date is the story of high-strung actors with a severe case of stage fright, shown just minutes before they're to perform. Simply, it's a play within a play, a caricature of how many actors view themselves and other theatre people around them. Those who love to look behind the scenes will en- joy the peephole feeling they'll get while wat- ching Jitters. But taking the theme aside, the title Jitters aptly describes the am- biance of Theatre Workshop Productions in their very first presenta- tion, scheduled February 10 at 8:30 p.m. on stage at the Latcham Centre. The youthful company, comprised mainly of students from Port Perry and Cartwright High Schools, has been plagued with nothing but problems since it began last year. 'Seeing Jitters might give them an idea of what we have been through," says the com- pany's director, John Foote. A the beginning, John assumed he would be able to rent space at Town Hall 1873, but somewhere along the line he was refused. And" then he's had problems getting people in the community to take Theatre Workshop Pro- ductions seriously -- many found it easy to under-estimate a group of teenagers. And finally, just when everything Ise was settl- ed, and Jitters was well underway, performers had to leave the stage and scuttle back to their desks. "We've been plagued with problems, alright," John says, shaking his head. "The exams have really hurt us." Although the play is important to the actors involved, nothing is more important to them than their schoolwork -- par- ticularly because many are in their last year. Still, in spite of everything, things are starting to come together and in the grand old «tradition, the show will goon. And if last week's rehearsal is any indica- tion, the play will be a showcase for the con- siderable talent of the young people in it. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Kidd from Goodwood called on Mrs. Bruce Bailey for a visit on Saturday. Bad case of stage fright All three Foote brothers are in the cast, including John, who is also directing. He plays Robert, a writer, who is a thorn in the side of everyone else in the cast because he doesn't know when to keep his nose out of other - people's business. Steve Foote, has been cast in a role he doesn't often play, that of a whiney sulk who wimps about the stage with a black eye and a bad case of nerves. Brother Jeff plays George the Direc- tor, the calm in the mid- dle of the storm and the only one in the whole bunch who attempts to referee the high-flying actors as they rassle about backstage. The play (within Jit- ters) that George is directing is called The Care and Treatment of Roses, which as John points out, could easily be re-named The Care and Treatment of Actors. There's one line in the play that goes "We're not adults, we're actors," and it's this childish bravado that George the sirector must deal with. Tish LeFort plays the . stage manager who can't stand George. She's loud- mouthed as an army sergeant and just as effi- cient which is endlessly frustrating because she can't stand the inefficien- cy of George's cast. Jeff Flieler, for exam- ple, is Patrick, the most arrogant and sarcastic - actor you'd ever want to meet. With this armour he hides his insecurity, and his fear of flopping like Jessica. Jessica has just returned from a Broad- way failure and she's not happy about it. Laurie Gerrits is the sleazy stage technician who joyfully makes a pass at the drunken Tom, played by Craig Paisley. Tickets for the show are $4 and are available from any cast member or call 985-2237.
