20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. February 14, 1984 Tough season ends quietly for the MoJacks by Joha B. McClelland The hockey season that began with such promise last October ended rather quietly Saturday evening at the Scugog Arena as the Port Perry MoJacks were knocked from the best of five Junior C quarter final three .games to one by the powerful Bowmanville Eagles. Facing elimination, the MoJacks put up a good fight in front of the home town fans on Sat- urday evening for two periods, but the Eagles just kept applying the pressure to take control of the game in the final frame for a 7-3 victory. Bowmanville will now meet Lakefield Chiefs in one of the semi-final series while Little Britain Merchants and Lindsay Muskies will go at it in the other. Lake- field dumped Cobourg three straight, while the Merchants dispatched the pesky Uxbridge Bruins in four games. Following the loss to the Eagles Saturday evening, MoJack coach Gary Elliott was clearly disappointed not just with the way the team performed in the play- offs, but during the season as well. "It was a frustrating year. I'm disappointed the team didn't finish higher in the stand- ings', he said. Elliott said a combin- ation of injuries and players not being able to suit up for every game and practise due to work commitments or school played a factor in the team's slide which began before Christmas and continued until just before the end of the regular schedule. Dur- ing that time, the Mo- Jacks fell from the race for first place to fifth spot. Despite his dis- appointment, Elliott said he understands that players in Junior C hockey don't have the luxury of putting the game ahead of their jobs or schooling. On Saturday night, the MoJacks fell behind 2-1 after 20 minutes as the Eagles got goals from Pete Krukkert and Brad Clemens, while John Fusco countered with a marker for Port Perry. Penalties hurt the Mo- Jacks in .the middle frame as Eagle captain Duane Major rapped in two power play markers which were almost carbon copies of each other. With the man advantage, he used the big shot from the blue line to give his team a 4-1 lead. Late in the period, MoJack defenseman Rob Nicholson cut the margin to two as he found the range on a shot from the right point with Bob Horton and Rob Malcolm drawing the assists. But the Eagles put the game away with two quick goals at 7:29 and 9:39 of the third as Brian Heard and Krukkert beat Clay Lovering in the MoJack nets. Brian Nicholson on a nice pass from Wayne Snodden made it 6-3 late in the period, but the game was well out of reach by this time. The final Eagle goal came at 18:57 and was Atoms win easily 4-0 On Saturday Feb. 11, the Malmont Atoms had an afternoon playoff game in Pickering Village and came home 4 to 0 winners. Carey Labiuk went the dis- tance i net to earn the shut out for the team. Captain Mike Feasby opened the scoring in the first period when he scored with Jason Cochrane assisting. Jody Logan followed up with Port's second marker of the game and Mark Andrews got the assist. Mark then netted Port's third goal mid- way in the third period and Brett Puckrin pick- ed up the assist. The final Port goal was notched by Greg Kitz- gerald and again Mark Andrews figured in with the lone assist. A good " - - team effort by the kids and the score was nut indicative of the margin of play Port held over Pickering Village. This game also marked the return of Jason Towns, No.5 on defence who is almost back in full flight 'from his leg injury he suffered Dec. 9, 1983, The team is glad to have Jason back on skates. . ro 1 3 22 The second annual 'over 40°' bonspiel at Port Perry Curling ~ Club, Saturday was captured by the rink of Harold Howsam (second from left) Bonspiel sponsor William Beare was on hand fo present Harold with the trophy. Team members include Joyce Howsam and Mary June and Glenn Smith. notched by Randy Ellis. Last Tuesday evening in Bowmanvidle, the Eagles took a 2-1 series lead with an 8-1 pound-' ing over the MoJacks in a game that had Port Perry players, team officials and supporters fuming over some of the calls by the referee. MoJacks ran into all kinds of penalty trouble (some of it deserved, some of it questionable at best) and the Eagles used the man advantage to knock in five power play goals. The lone MoJack marker came early in the third period from John Fusco, but it had no bearing on the out- come of the game. The Eagles took 28 minutes in penalties in this game where temp- ers were running thin almost from the opening whistle. Probably the tone of the game was set early in the first period when Eagle Andy Terry tangl- ed with MoJack defenseman Dave Rock- brune who really did nothing more than try to protect himself. But they both were hit with fighting majors and game misconducts and the loss of Rockbrune hurt the MoJacks as he had been a steady per- former along the blue line. Bowmanville during this series were dis- asters as far as the Mo- Jacks were concerned as they were slammed 14-4 and 8-1. Elliott said he was most disappointed over the 8-1 loss in game three which he considered the most important match of the series. He had some mild words of criticism over the officiating, but said in the end, it probably didn't make much diff- erence in light of the way the Eagles were playing in their home arena. PERSPECTIVE While the MoJack coach, their fans and certainly the players have to feel disappoint- ed at the team's fort- unes this season, there were some bright spots along the way, especi- ally in the first half as the MoJacks put together a string of vic- tories which at one point had them in first place. The injury factor hurt the team in second half, but so did the fact that two other clubs in the league - Little Britain and Lakefield --- began to improve immensely and vaulted past the MoJacks into third and fourth place. On the plus side, the team has to be pleased with the play of the two young defensemen Rob Malcolm and Rob Nicholson. They were paired together for 'much of the year and while they made some "rookie mistakes" they proved they could play in this league. If they return next season, they will be a mainstay of the team. Dave Rockbrune and Mike Ryan also worked well along the blue line all season. Ryan is an all-star in the Junior C loop, and the team no doubt is hoping to see 'these two at training camp next season. Gord Rogers, who joined the team in December and then was injured is a fine defenseman who will help the team next year, if he returns. And big Vaughn Mc- Kee played his heart out for the MoJacks game in and game out. No- body showed more hustle or determination and he threw some heavy hits against the opposition. Brian Nicholson proved to be an offen- sive threat, the kind of player with a knack for putting the puck in the net. He is eligible to return next season. Bob Horton and Scott Wallace are also eligible for next year. Horton is one of the players who wasn't able to suit up every game because of his job and this hurt his " conditioning and timing. But he's a multi-talent- ed player with speed 0 burn and hopefully he'll be back. Wallace got off to a slow start and never really got on track this season. There are several MoJacks who won't be back in uniform because of over-age including captain Todd Wilbur, Brian Mikkelsen, John Fusco, and Glenn McKay. And while he declined to say specifically, coach Elliott hinted after the game Saturday night that he may not be back behind the bench next year. "I'm not sure right now. We'll see in a couple of weeks," he said. Proms) | FRR Saws s MINOR SOFTBALL ASSOC. : lencanne! : GENERAL : The two games in DO-NO's ; MEETING ; oon RAFT 0 Conway Gardens - Port Perry 0 § queenst.
