Love, Gloria THE DURHAM BOARD OF EDUCATION FRENCH IMMERSION PROGRAMS The Durham Board of Education offers an alternative to the regular program, in the form of the French Immersion program, in a number of schools through- out the Region. Pupils enrolled in the French Immersion program follow the same Durham Board of Education course outlines as do students in the regular program. In Kinder- garten, Grades 1, 2 and 3 the language of instruction is French. A full English Language Arts program is introduced in Grade 4. In successive grades, about half the subjects are taught in English and half in French. Applications are being accepted from parents whose children are eligible to attend Kindergarten in September, 1984. Please contact the Principal of the nearest school offering the French Immersion program by February 15, if you are interested in enrolling your child. The three-member electoral commission, which has been working on the boundary changes since last June attempts to take into account. shifts in population which showed up in the 1981 Federal census. The significant changes for this area now being proposed by the Commission include the following: Scugog and Manvers Township, including Port Perry would become part of Durham East riding which takes in Bowmanville, Newcastle and runs across the top of Oshawa-Whitby at Taunton Road. The Teachers walk out of contract talks that no progress could be made on this issue. The Elementary Teachers Association claims that Durham has the second highest PTR in Ontario at 22-1, and in fact there are as many as 35 students in some intermediate grades. The PTR has become the number one priority for teachers in Dur- ham's elementary schools, and the Assoc- iation notes that in secondary schools the ratio is 16.9 to one, and it says the "discrepency between elementary and secondary PTR has never been greater." The statement notes eight areas of concern related to the PTR. riding would be bounded on the west by Durham Road 23, and by the Newcastle Town boun- dary on the east. The Durham East riding is currently held by Sam Cureatz. The present riding of Durham-York held by Mr. Stevenson would lose all of Brock Township, a portion of North Picker- ing, but would continue to include Uxbridge, Stouffville, Georgina and East Gwillimbury. The new riding would be named York-Ontario. Another new riding named Durham Centre would be created in Oshawa-Whitby while the boundary of the pre- sent Oshawa riding would be pushed to the east city limits. The present Durham West riding held by George Ashe would be pushed north to include Ajax and Pickering, and there would be a new riding created in Markham. Mr. Stevenson explain- ed that all the changes are because of increased population in the Regions of Durham and York, and there is a kind of domino effect in the rid- ings to the north of the shore of Lake Ontario. Mr. Stevenson in- dicated that he is not too happy to see his riding of Durham-York split up and re-named. "I don't like the idea of losing Port Perry and Scugog Township,'"' he said, noting that Durham-York is largely dependent on agriculture, tourism and small business as the mainstay of its economy. If the proposed riding changes become law, it will mean the third time in the last decade or so that Port Perry and Scugog voters . have found themselves in a new riding. They were moved from the old On- tario riding to Durham- York and now will end up in Durham East. : There are presently 125 ridings in Ontario.
