He also praised the Chamber of Commerce for initiating the program and for their valuable contri- butions to the lifestyle of the community. Peter Skinner, a business consultant representing the Minis- try of Industry and Trade, who sponsored the program, told the merchants that he was pleased that Port Perry had received the pro- gram so enthusiasti- cally. "Our job is only to set-up the program, then we leave you with the consultants", he said. In his opening re- marks to the gathering, Knud Jensen thanked the Chamber and the merchants for their hospitality saying "Port Perry has been one of the two best towns that we have ever been in." He predicted that 1984 would be a very good year for small business, although it could not be considered a boom- year. "With a little investment by the local merchants, Port Perry could see some signifi- cant benefits," he said. Some of the other general comments the consultants had about Port Perry and its shopping area follow: In regards to com- puterization, the gen- eral feeling was that a computer will not solve all of a companies pro- blems, and sometimes will create an even more expensive problem. Mr. Jensen's recommendation was not to be too quick to computerize, and make sure you have things going the way you want them before you con- sider a computer. Downtown image of the community is extremely pleasant, but the consultants were quick to point out the garbage cans and empty flower containers do not enhance the street. Mr. Fortin suggested that the image could be spruced- up with little cost if everyone co-operated. '"'Many towns would love to have the archi- tecture, the view and People and pets will 3 ; explore between us The very special rela- tionship that can develop between people and their pets will be the topic for a film presentation and discussion at the Scugog Public Library this Wednesday evening at 7:30 P.M. However, with the break in the cold weather, water begins to move again in the lake, adding to the oxygen content which in turn causes the pickerel to feed more aggress- ively. If this traditional pattern hold, Mr. Mc- Quay predicted that fishing between now and March 15 should be pretty good on the lake. Conservation officers noted that the fishing on the lake had picked up over the last weekend. Ice fishing enthusiasts are reminded that the yellow pickerel season on Scugog ends March 15 and that is also the deadline for the removal of all ice huts from the lake. In terms of Tourism the suggestion was that Port Perry is a "talk" town. "Everyone talks tourism, but there is need for a concentrated effort in this area. We hope you shift into an action-mode, and not just talk about tour- . ism", Mr.'Jensen said. In conclusion, the con- sultant urged the businessmen and women to start working together. "You can't fight by yourself. Every business will be more successful if you join together in a spirit of co-operation," he said. During the five-month duration of the pro- gram, the Ontario government has spent close to $15,000 on the community for this pro- gram. Three short films will be screened which ex- plore the animal-human companion bond. One of the films deals specifically with the beneficial aspects pets can have with the elder- ly. Another film looks at how pets have been used positively with tough criminals in prisons.
