10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March é, 1984 Jitters marks successful production for company by Cathy Robb The cast and crew might have had a few pre-show jitters but they 'hardly showed in either production of the David French comedy Jitters, the first effort of * Scugog's newly formed Theatre Workshop Productions. The Latcham Centre was the host for what was originally supposed to be the one and only performance of Jitters, on February 10. The "audience liked it so much, however, that the whole crew was moved over to Blackstock last Friday for a dinner theatre encore at the request of the Black- stock Lion's Club. This second perform- ance came as a surprise to a few local people who saw the first one and were offended . by Jitters' earthy language. As play- wright David French wrote it, the script details the high-strung antics of actors just before they go on stage. Predictably, their vocabulary isn't the prettiest as they ver- bally tear each other apart, and although the liberal use of four-letter words adds realism, at least one person who phoned the Star office to complain isn't ready for that kind of realism. Language aside, the cast and crew of Jitters is to be commended on a satisfactory first pro- duction. Many of those involv- ed with the group had little or no previous experience with theatre before attempting Jitters, and yet the play came off with few serious errors, Under John Foote's direction, Jessica became the touchy, loud-mouthed star of the show, just returned from a flop on Broad- way. Eighteen-year-old Andrea Lewis did her best to play Jessica as the hard-hearted star she was, but sometimes lapsed into a shrillness that became irritating by the middle of the second act. A tad more sensitivity near the end was also called for. Overall, she had some memorable scenes, particularly near the end when Jessica receives the worst review of the play and breaks down, but a few rough edges were showing. Jeff Flieler played Patrick, Jesgica' 8s co- star .and her 'match for bitchiness. Mr. Flieler managed to inject some real humour into some of his scenes but had the same penchant for shrillness as Miss Lewis. Tish Lefort had the same problem. As the gregarious stage man- ager Nick, Miss Lefort was constantly shout- ing. If all three actors had toned down their volume a couple of notches in places, everyone's ear drums would have been happier. Steve Foote, a familiar face to many local theatre-goers, stole the show with his characterization of Phil, the neurotic mama's boy who keeps the audience laughing when his shoes don't fit, his eye gets blackened the hard way and his cat dies. His brother Jeff also turned in a good per- formance as George, the director of the show who can't seem to get a handle on his actors. The character is just too mild-mannered and easy-going to control his crew and although it's a nondescript part, Jeff plays it consistantly. . Craig Paisley, Kim Deraaf, and Laurie Gerrits shared minor roles in Jitters but all three showed promise for future productions. Mr. Paisley in parti- cular was extremely funny as a drunk who showed up for work in heart-adorned boxer shorts. John Foote also undertook a minor role. EMMERSON 19I QUEEN ST. But as the director pointed out, the group isn't so much concerned about the set as what is going on within the set. While Theatre Work- -shop Productions may have a ways to go yet, with some experience it should be able to pro- vide some colourful entertainment for local theatre goers in Port Perry and area. Meeting cancelled Due to inclement weather, the Senior Citizens meeting was cancelled. Just a re- minder we are back to our regular Wednesday. The first meeting is March 14th with a pot luck supper.
