TELEPHONE: 655-4936 Woodworking hobby is a tonic for retired folk Even as a very young boy, Armour McMillan enjoyed working with his hands, tinkering with things. But growing up on a Reach Township farm didn't leave him much free time once all the chores were done. And the same was true as he spent much of his adult life working his own farm near Greenbank. Armour retired from farming some 24 years' ago and began working full time with Morrow Farm Equipment in Sunderland. He still works there a couple of days each week doing the books, and the rest of the time you'll probably find him puttering happily away at what he calls "my hobby'. About five years ago, Armour took up wood- working. Now, as he approaches his 76th birthday in April, he says he can't imagine, what life would be like if, he didn't have "his. hobby' to help him pass, the time. "I was very uneasy just sitting around with little to do. The trick is to keep yourself active mentally," he told the Star in an interview last week. His first creations were small rocking chairs and other pine furniture. But these days, he is crafting all kinds of things from wood: everything from multi-compartment bird houses, pie-boxes and doll cradles to intricate wind-mills with moving parts. - (= | = --- = ™ And the workshop in the basement of his Greenbank home has grown with his craft as he's added a band saw, jig saw and electric sander to the assort- ment of hand tools. 'I enjoy the challenge of shaping things from wood," he says as he proudly shows off one of his earlier creations. It's a hand-carved horse and wagon team, intricate in detail right down to the tiny collars and harness. He spent almost a full winter making this, and under- standably, it's not for sale. But Armour does get a lot of orders for such things as the doll cradles, bird houses and windmills. He charges about enough to cover the cost of his materials. "There's no way I'm in this for the money", he says with a smile. He firmly believes that any kind of a hobby is great tonic for retired people who so often complain that '"They've nothing to do," and so much time on their hands. "It's a good way to relax and keep yourself active," he says. Armour admits there is one wee bit of a pro- blem associated with his hobby. ""You need to have an understanding wife to put up with all the dust, and Rachel has been very understanding," he says, adding that he and Rachel will cele- brate their 50th wedding anniversary this Sept- ember.
