GENES a rare treat (From page 13) with an "Impossible Dream', left anatomy in "San Francisco", and ended with a clock- watcher's duel between "Tonight" and "Tomorrow". The only thing missing was "Yesterday". Then on to Rogers and Hammerstein -- or what passed for the "Sound of Music'. Bubble gum and Elvis were scoobie- doobie-do alive in Port Perry for a few electric moments. "Sweet Georgia Brown', their signature song, followed crisply, cleverly. Suddenly, showtime was ended 'reluctantly', with Franc's wife poem- set-to-music, "The End of Day". This poetic, powerful finale generat- ed a Beatles encore, then Genes were off to Edmonton to start their Western tour, wishing they could take the warm Port Perry audience with them. Surely Garth, Mary, and Franc Mosbaugh are among the most attuned and aware per- formers on the con- temporary music circuit. They played their audience as they played their voices and instruments -- to perfec- tion. Their routines hummed slickly along, gears shifting from low to high and back, voices blending in scat, fugues, madrigals, even falsetto and mimicry. Mary's classical voice studies at the University of Toronto, Garth's com- posing, arranging and sound wizardry, Franc's composing, vocal harmony, and guitar accompaniment, and the trio's geneti- cally-linked musical heritage have furnished Genes with the found- ation for solid and memorable entertain- ment skills. These skills closed Town Hall 1873's Concert Series with a rare genetic treat. Thanks XY, XX, and XY: Mendel could have experimented with a beat or two from you. And thanks Town Hall 1873 for varied and scintillating quality pro- gramming which brought to Port Perry such talent and artistry as Genes, Tom Millar, the Oshawa Symphony, the Jazz Barons, and the Shaw Festival. Information regard- ing the 1984-'85 Concert Series will be forth- coming soon.
