Crt ETT Em TT re mm--- | 10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 17, 1984 The McDonnell family was awakened late Thursday night by three young men travelling along Highway 12 south of Port Perry who spotted a fire burning in the fami- ly's barn. Firefighters from Oshawa, Whit- by and Scugog Township were called fo the Service at 7:30 p.m. scene but the barn burned to the ground, with more than $50,000 damage. Goats saved from burning barn Harold and Stella Mc- Donnell consider them- selves lucky, even though their barn burn- ed to the ground late Thursday night. They're lucky because all but two of their valuable angora goat herd survived the $50,000 blaze which leveled the old black \ barn and destroyed last year's mohair crop and a large quantity of seed. The family was alert- ed to the fire by three young men driving along Highway 12 who happened to spot the blaze as it gathered momentum in the barn (at the corner of High- way 12 and the Scugog Whitby Townline). Without thinking, the men banged on the. McDonnell's door, wak- ing them up, and then helped the family clear the animals out of the barn. "We were very lucky to get them out of the barn", Mrs. McDonnell said. She is certain the fire began with electrical shorts at the pump, and says another barn will be built as soon as possible to house the goats which are now being sheltered in the McConnell garage. / Spring Concert comes to the Island Church Scugog Island News by Mrs. Earl Reader Plan to keep Friday April 27 open for the Annual Spring Concert with music and cos- tumes by the Island United Church Choirs assisted by many friends of the surround- ing area.
