Saturday evening was a big night for the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 419. Old Bill's Night, a celebration designed especial- ly for veterans of World War |, is an annual event and one of the most important for the branch. Some were local, others came from Sunnybrook Hospital with the help of volunteer drivers from a Toronto branch of the Legion. Dinner was prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary and as usual, it was delicious. Guest speaker Les Rowbottom presented an inspiring reflection on 70 years of change - and an outlook for the future. A distinguished soldier with an impress- ive record in the armed forces, Mr. Rowbottom came from a military family. His father served with the British Army with service in France in World War 1. His military career began in 1951 with the Royal Artillary. He join- ed the Canadian army in 1958 and has served across Canada and in the United States. Ethel Irvine, Pres., opened the meeting with words of welcome and a little poem. After the singing of O Canada, with Edna Beckett at the piano, we had a two minute silence in memory of Vince McNenly. After various reports were read and adopted, we had our business. There will be an Easter Supper on April 25 at 5:30 with special programme by Gordon Prentice from Uxbridge. After the re- peating of the Mizpah Benediction, Win Philp gave us an informative talk and demonstration of the synthisizer and we all sang In Your Easter Bonnet. This was much appreciated. Several members cele brated birthdays with a lovely birthday cake. A dainty lunch enjoyed by all. 1965 hc spent a year in Egypt with the United Nations emergency force in the Gaza Strip. While serving with the - Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in 1959 he began aircrew training. He commanded 450 squadron detachment in Edmonton in the early 1970's and has spent a number of years in flying duties. He attended the Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston and was on the teaching staff of the Canadian Forces College in Toronto when he left the regular forces in 1976. He has just spent a week at his headquarters in Winnipeg and soon will be on assignment to Germany with our forces there. In civilian 'life, he came to Oshawa to build the marina at the port of Oshawa and has been harbourmaster there since 1976. He is Paying tribute to war heroes married and has four daughters. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Eleanor McKean of Cannington and it was enjoyed by all. But the stars of the night were the Old Bills themselves. As 'one Legion member put it, "Our Old Bills are getting fewer every year but with God's Will we hope that we shall see all of them again next year." Easters of childhood remembered in poem Prince Albert Area News by Earline Armstrong Prince Albert UCW met in the church base- ment on Wednesday April 11, 15 members and 1 guest were pres- ent. Dorothy Hope open- ed the meeting and a poem entitled "Easter's of our Childhood". De- votion was under the leadership of Diana Brough, Earline Arm- strong and Linda Mec- Millan. They chose Springtime as their theme. Earline read a poem called "The Man Next Door". Diana read "Spring Time". Linda 'did the -scripture "Mathew Verse 24-34 Hymn 589. This is My Father's World was sung. Meditation was read by Diana - Prayer by Linda offering was gathered and Earline read the Thanks Prayer, Hymn 15- For the Beauty of the Earth and devotion. Norma Robinson introduced our guest speaker Jean Campbell, a splendid speaker indeed. Jean spoke on the work her son, Brian is doing in Dominica, and the needs of the people there. Roll Call was answered by helping Jean with sewing and knitting items her son needs for these people. Thank you Jean for coming, we enjoyed you very much (Sorry about the lunch). Business part of the meeting - saw a thank you note from Prince Albert Youth Group, also letters from Scugog Beautification Comm- ittee, Conference on June 89 at Waterloo University and the Hos- pital Auxiliary on there Spring Fair on April 28 at the Latcham Centre and ladies please remember the bake table. The grocery tapes are going very well. Keep saving them May 27 is UCW Sunday at the Prince Albert Church and get your hands ready for May 1, a cleaning bee is going to invade the kitchen, make sure you are one of the busy bees. We start at 9:00 in the morning. The meeting closed with the saying of the benedition. I hear Bert Weeden is trying out the beds in the Oshawa Hospital. Better days ahead Bert, we are thinking of you. It was like 'Old Home Week' at the weekly card party at the Prince Albert Hall on Thursday April 12, 13 tables were filled, a lot have return- ed from winter vaca- tions. Ladies prizes went to Fran Gibson, Mary Poots and Bessie McCullogh and on the men's side high was Mildred Thompson, second was Jim Gibson (keeping it in the family), and low was Norman Birkett. Lone hand series went to Dorothy McDiarmid with 11. Come on out next Thursday April 19, see how everybody put the winter through. Deepest sympathy is extended to Eileen and Terry Hodgins and Heather and Kevin in the passing of Eileen's father, Gordon Cherrie on Friday evening. God bless you all.
