FOR EXAMPLE YOUR MONTHLY Angry mothers concerned about their children's welfare mar- ched along various streets in Port Perry last week protesting a re- cent Scugog Township Council decision to leave crossing guards where they are. The parents group say they will continue to picket until a crossing is set up along Highway 7A near Ottawa Street. For These mothers don't take defeat easily. Despite Scugog Town- ship Council's decision last Monday night which will leave all crossing guards in the position they now occupy, a group of parents are still fighting for changes. Brenda LeFort and Val Robinson, an angry group of mothers and their children picketed various sites in Port Perry last week, includ- ing Highway 7A and Ottawa Street, the mun- icipal office and Mayor Jerry Taylor's insur- ance office. "I'l come outside every day until some- thing is done for the safety of the children", Mrs. LeFort said early Tuesday morning. The picketing was sparked when council firmly rejected their pleas to change the crossing along Highway 7A. What they're asking for is a crossing at Ottawa Street, either by addirig another crossing guard or by moving the present crossing near Simcoe Street further east. They're also ask- ing for two guards instead of one at the Oshawa Road inter- section, either at the lights or preferably away from the lights. Board of Education, Durham Regional Police and school principals. . Mayor Jerry Taylor said council will un- doubtedly stick to its decision unless any of the above agencies cat- egorically state the crossing locations should be changed. "The final decision, of course, is council's dec- ision. I think we were very fair and very good at least listening to everybody," he said. "We're as concerned about the safety of the children as anyone." Although the police and the board have not yet firmly stated they do not think the locations should be moved, their input has generally been negative. Mayor Taylor said he would still like to hear firm viewpoints from both groups, as well as local principals. "I'm not saying the parents should go out and browbeat the police or the board of educa- tion to change their minds," he said, 'but we would like the views of all those who are involved with the traffic of children." Regional councillor Lawrence Malcolm, who told the parents group they were "beat- ing a dead horse", said he was aware of the picketing and didn't expect it would change his mind on the issue. 'Apparently they're upset with me for what I said," he admitted, and then added, "We change our mind from time to time but I don't know why we would change our minds on this one. I'm convinced for the time being that the crossing guards are fine where they are now."
