Awards won by members during the past year were present- ed on this occasion as follows: Highest B.C.A. - Tom and John Wetheral, R.R.2, Sunderland, with a composite B.C.A. of Name change As of January 1984 the Holstein-Friesian Association of Canada officially changed its name to Holstein Assoc- iation of Canada. This By-Law change was introduced at the 1984 100th Annual Meeting of members and clearly reflects the direction that Canadian Holsteins have taken this past 100 years. Pedigreed Holstein- Friesians were intro- duced into Canada in 1881 and breeders adopt- ed Holstein-Friesian to describe their cattle. The Friesian and Hol- stein are actually two distinct branches of the same genetic tree. The Friesian is a stockier, smaller animal with beefing qualities where- as the Holstein is a larger, more angular type. Canada has gone the Holstein route, breeding an animal that combines optimal pro- duction and desirable type associated with longevity. Therefore, it appears logical to use Holstein when referring to the Canadian animal. It has taken the Assoc- iation this 100 years to officially delete Fries- ian from its name even though its logo 'Holstein Canada' has been in use for almost a decade. This refinement is just the first of the many Cen- tennial activities to be initiated this coming 162. Runner-up Douglas G. Harder, R.R.5, Sun- derland - composite B.C.A. of 161.
