- 6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 1, 1984 Letters letters policy It has always been the policy of this vspaper to encourage our readers to make use of the letters to the editor column. : Our readers have a right to freely express their opinions and viewpoints on just about any Dear Sir: . Mr. Roy Grierson, candidate for the NDP subject, and we feel that a lively letters column in Durham-Northum- helps make a better community newspaper. t We insist, however, that a letter writer sign Derian d. «demonstrates his or her name. On rare occasions, we will agree to with-hold publication of a letter fuzzy thinking on writer's name, if we feel there are very good Socialists often employ reasons to do so. in their attempts to trick Under no circumstances will this paper print an anonymous letter to the editor. While we enjoy receiving letters from our readers, we must continue to insist on knowing the identity of the writer. people into voting for them. Fortunately, as the popularity polls illus- trate on a weekly basis, the Canadian electorate is becoming more sop- histicated, rejecting destructive "free lunch" policies, and recognizing the moral and intellectual bank- ruptcy of the New Democratic Party. I won't take the time to dissect Mr. Grier- son's position on the compensation of senior executives, but it should be pointed out that the impressive figures are partly media-created; not exactly as present- ed. For instance, an chatterbox (continued) That was more than 15 years ago, but I recall every moment of that memorable adventure like it was just last week. When the long weekend rolls around this month, I'll enjoy the fishing trip, the fellowship, swapping late night stories around the kitchen table, getting up to hit the lake at first light. But at least once, I'm sure my thoughts will travel back in time to Piglet, Welsh, Hogsback and fishing trips that will stay a part of me forever. executive would have to exercise stock options, risking his own money, THE ONE HOUR PHOTO STORE -- PORT PERRY PLAZA -- ISPLEASED TO PLAY A PART IN THE HOSPITAL EXPANSION FUND! Unlike the Socialists, most of us believe that anyone who does an outstanding job deser- ves extra compensation, whether he works on the shop floor or in the executive suite. How- , ever, the turn-around in the auto industry has much more to do with the billions the share- holders invested in new plant and equipment than it has to do with extra effort on the part of the executives or the workers. Without risk- taking by those invest- ors (and at least the possibility of a good return on their money) there would be no jobs for anyone. That con- cept may be too com- plex for the NDP. Mr. Grierson's direct "investment" by con- sumers is a parlour trick the Socialists have PORT been playing for years. Unfortunately, you or I spending our money on a Japanese car, Korean stereo equipment, Cal- ifornia vegetables, European and Asian clothes, and U.S. built farm machinery may help local merchants, but it will do little for the thousands employed by General Motors, Dofasco, Chrysler, etc. Only real investors buy shares in companies when times are bad, supplying the necessary capital for modern- ization and expansion. The average citizen never becomes a share- holder. If only the workers in the plant received the profits in the good times, as Mr. Grierson suggests, com- panies would gradually be "run into the ground", and we would become a poor society. They are run by dogmatic zealots as is typical of the New Democratic Party. For- tunately, Canadian voters are proving to be much too smart to be taken in by their poorly thought-out economic schem~s. The average citizen may not risk his money on the stock market, investing in weak companies in the hope that they will someday make money, but he and she know that we need strong com- panies, both to produce secure jobs with good pay, and to have a great country. play". his", said Fishley. REN Police identify body of dead man Durham Regional Police identified the "partially decomposed" body of a man recently found in a clump of trees near the former Uxbridge-Scott Townline recently. Detective Sergeant Jim Fishley said the identification of Karl Varr, 65, of Estonian Camp, Udora, was made following tests at the Centre for Forensic Science in Toronto. "The body was identified as his," said Fishley. He stated there were no signs of 'foul According to Fishley, a friend reported Mr. Varr missing to York Regional Police on November 19, 1983. The las. sighting of Mr. Varr was with a bicycle and when his body was discovered 12 kilometres from where he went missing it was with a bicycle. "It (the bicycle) was positively identified as The cause of death has not begn determined and unless current testing reveal more information, Fishley said, there will be no further police investigation. RENTFNSAVE Reader says: NDP fuzzy on economics Interestingly, the polls demonstrating the decline of the NDP are being taken among the workers and consumers that Socialists like Mr. Grierson hope to attract with their fuzzy economics. It isn't rich people and corporations that will dispose of the NDP and its cult of mediocrity. The very population sector the party looks to for support will see through its simplistic economic theories, and will have nothing to do with such foolishness. Yours truly, Glen E.
