LE BE Beginning next season, all rep teams in the Port Perry Minor Hockey Association must have at least one person behind the bench who has completed the Level 1 coaches clinic. PPMHA president Grant Williams told the Association annual meeting Sunday night that this new regulation was put in place by the OMHA to up-grade the level of coaching staffs. Although not mand- atory at this time, Mr. Williams went on to say the Association strongly recommends that at least one team official also complete a course in first aid. And the 'Association also is recommending that House League coaches complete the Level 1 clinic, although this is not mandatory. Last year, about a dozen coaches and man- agers within the local organization completed the four hour Level 1 clinic held in Port Perry. Clinics wil be held outside Port Perry before the start of next season, and it is expect- ed that at least one clinic will be held here some time next winter. Mr. Williams told the meeting he originally was not in favour of the mandatory regulation for all-star coaches, but he changed his mind after hearing the argu- ments by the OMHA. In other business at the annual meeting, treasurer Walt Sandison reported that the Assoc- iation will start next season with a balance of about $2000. And because of this, it does not appear likely the Association will be forced to raise registra- tion fees next year. Explaining the reason for the $2000 "profit" Mr. Williams said the Association had 25 more players last season than expected, and he also noted the $1500 donation from the Ladies Auxil- iary. There were about 425 players registered in the Minor Hockey system in Port Perry last winter, the highest total ever, an increase of well over 100 in the last three years. Some of the other items of business dis- cussed at the meeting included a suggestion that exhibition games between House League teams be organized with other communities. However, it was point- ed out that because House League players are not carded by the OMHA, special per- mission from the senior * organization" is meeded before such an exhibit- iom game could be played. The issue of using the Blackstock Arena for practise time also came under discussion. Last season was the first time PPMHA used the Blackstock Arena for team practises. With ice time for practise at the Scugog Arena - at a premium because of the number of teams, Mr. Williams told the meet- ing Blackstock Arena will again be used next year. But he said the Association is not going to rent ice time in Blackstock if just a handful of players turn out for practise there. ELECTIONS In the elections for new officers, Mr. Will- iams was returned for a fifth term as president of the local association. He defeated Don Steele on a secret ballot vote by the 30 people who attended the meeting. All other executive positions were filled by acclamation. Doug Moore is first vice president and rep team convenor; Larry Lee is second vice president and house league con- venor; and Walt Sandi- son will continue duties as secretary-treasurer. The eight people nom- inated as directors for 1984-85 are Don Steele, Marg White, Dave Obee, Lorne Traves, Dave Ballingall, Doug Scott, Wayne Stainton and Carl Fitzgerald. One recommended change in the constitu- tion was withdrawn at the annual meeting, but will be re-introduced at an executive meeting in the fall. Legion team in A division After two months of indoor training the Port Perry Legion Fastball Club hit the local dia- monds last week in preparation for the up- coming season. Coming back for a second year on the squad are pitcher John Annis and Lawrie Will- iams; infielders Mike Healey, Jay Williams, Dave Dickson, Ken Bry- ant and Colin Wackett; outfielders Bill St. John, Rick Evans, Bob Evans, Ron Redman and Brian Smith. Newcomers this year are pitcher Tim Thomp- son from last years local junior team and infield- ers Warren Hall, Grant Jackson, Brian Emory and Larry Pilkey. Playing in the Oshawa City and District "A" Division with the new Senior "B" entry Teddy's Deli; Whitby's Intermediate 'A' Legion team, Lindsay's Inter- mediate 'B' Club and the Junior 'A' Oshawa squad will provide excellent competition for the Port Legion team. Coming off last year's 3rd place finish in the all-Ontario champion- ship, the squad has been strengthened in the hitt- ing department with the new players. Hopefully with the amount and calibre of games to be played this summer it will lead to another good showing come play-off time. Port started the exhibition schedule on Sunday by defeating Whitby Legion at Iroquois Park 3-0. On Tuesday night they play the Oshawa Merchant O.F.L. Team in Durham Field at 7:30 p.m. and on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. Port hosts the Senior 'B' Deli Club. The 1st league game goes on Wedniesday May 16th at 8:30 p.m. at home against the Oshawa Juniors. Your local support would be greatly appreciated.
