A very impressive ceremony took place at the Cartwright Central Public School to comm- emorate Bicentennial Year, a group of stud- ents performed a fine Fort York Contingent Drill to set the stage for the flavour of the after- noon programme. Prin- cipal Mr. J. Hinch welcomed the fine crowd. The Canadian Flag was raised by Mrs. Allan Lawrence who represented her hus- band Mr. Allan Law- rence, M.P. Durham- Northumberland. The Junior Choir led by Mrs. J. Jeffrey assisted by a group of recorders led by Mrs. L. Elliot sang "The Maple Leaf For- ever'. Mr. Ross Steven- son, M.P.P. Durham- York presented the Pro- vincial Flag. The Prim- ary Choir -under the direction of Mrs. C. Swain and Miss K. Morton sang Give Us A Place to Stand. The Bicentennial Flag was raised by Harvey Gra- ham, councillor for Scugog Township Ward Four. The Massed Choirs of C.C.P.S. sang "Grow Along with Ont- ario'"' which was com- posed by Mr. Robert Thistle and arranged by Miss K. Morton. Both Mr. Thistle and Miss Morton were presented to the audience. Mr. Wm. Fairburn, Superin- tendent, Durham North brought remarks from the Board: Mr. J. Hinch unveiled the Bicentenn- ial Plaque followed by the Ceremonial Tree Planting. Mr. Wm. Forder, oldest citizen of the area, Vice-principal Mr. W.D. Brown and twenty-four students of Cartwright Public School all planted trees Mr. Fairburn and Miss Morton each planted trees on behalf of the Board. Closing remarks by Mr. J. Hinch con- cluded a very impress- ive event. Les and Patti Watters, Tommy and Karen returned home on Monday from a most enjoyable holiday in Florida. Mrs. Glenys Gotham has been visit- ing friends and relatives in England for the past two weeks. She will be returning home this week. The Blackstock Women's Institute met Wednesday, May 2nd at the Blackstock Town Hall. After everyone enjoyed a lovely straw- berry shortcake dessert the meeting opened by singing W.I. Ode and repeating the Mary Stewart Collect. Presi- dent Dora Martyn wel- comed everyone and read a poem, 'So People Who Have Gar- dens'. Edith McLaugh- lin introduced the speaker, Doreen Van- Camp who delighted all with some selections on her flute. A talk on some books she has read one being Future Shock where the author says "too much change too fast for us to cope' is confusing to us. She led a discussion on Citizen- ship with almost every- one participating. She was thanked by Patricia Sleep. The Roll Call was answered with an old momentum I like. Plans were made to have a Yard and Bake Sale at Mrs. Frank Hoskin's on June 2 from 10 to 4 p.m. The W.I. picnic table to be painted and put in the park. Finishing touches were put on the plans for the District Annual to be held on May 23rd in the Black- stock United Church. Registration commenc- ing at 9:15. The motto was in the form of a debate by 6 members. The Good Old Days versus modern days was enjoyed by all with a chuckle. The meeting was brought to a close by BIG SUMMER BASH June 8&9 singing O Canada. Saturday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Thompson were Mrs. Bruce Heaslip and Mrs. George Heaslip both of Port Perry. Better health is wish- ed for the following patients in Port Perry Hospital: Cecil Hamil- ton, Alma Taylor, Susie Harris and Lulu Gra- ham, also to Grant Edgerton who is a patient in Sunnybrook Hospital inToronto and to Mrs. Cecil Hamilton who is not well at home. The community is sorry to lose Jackie and Doug Danter, Adam and Heather who moved from their home on Venning Court to Port Perry last week. Mr. and Mrs. Brunette and infant son from Peter- borough have moved into the house recently vacated by the Danters. We welcome them to Blackstock. On Thursday evening the 4-H Achievement Day for the quilting project was held at C.C.P.S. It was hosted by the Blackstock Quazy Quilters. Black- stock Queen's Own Quilters presented a skit entitled Scraps Can Be Beautiful with all members participating. The Blackstock Patch Workers presented an exhibit Tools of the Trade with Deanna Jacobs and Lisa Van- Schagen. There were also many other pres entations made by the other clubs from Dur- ham East. After the presentation the R.0.S. Specialist, Miss Barb- ara Wceese made some comments which will be helpful in the future for making presentation. The audience enjoyed a film called Patterns of Love. Two local girls, Eleanor Kelly and Lynn McLaughlin received their Provincial Honours - the comple- tion of twelve units. There were also two girls who received their County Honours - the completion of six units. These two girls were Elaine Kelly and Natalie Green. Congra- tulations go to these four girls. The spoons and plaques were given out and then the evening was closed with the 4-H Pledge. On the weekend the Cartwright Rangers attended Olympic Meet at Greenwood. Eleanor Kelly, Anne-Marie Hoogeveen and Dawn Bayley won the trophy for the best Ranger Company in attendance.
