Steve, a grade 8 student at R.H. Cornish School will leave for the East Coast on May 13 to compete in the Canada- wide Science Fair, and needless to say, he is looking forward to the experience. Steve's project, called "Snow Control", will be up against some 200 others from all across Canada in the Junior (grades 7-8) physicial sciences division. To win this berth in the all-Canada finals, Steve placed first at the R.H. Cornish competi- tion and repeated the same first place finish in the Durham Region finals held at Dunbarton High School in Picker- ing. Steve's project tested the efficiency of several kinds of barriers to control snow, and since drifting snow is a real problem for people in this part of the country, especialy those living in the rural areas, the results have some prac- tical application. Steve found that a barrier with a 50 per cent density is the best kind to prevent snow from drifting. Along with his own observa-. Lions last winter of various types of snow fences and barriers, Steve's project involved the construction of a small wind tunnel. He substituted ordin- ary detergent for snow and used a hair dryer to blow the "detergent snow" through the wind tunnel against the various kinds of barr- iers. He then measured the snow where it fell, plotted the findings on a graph and came up with the conclusions. He said he wasn't totally sur- prised at his findings. This is the first time a student from R.H. Corn- ish has won a trip to the Canadian Science Fair finals, and he will travel with four others from the Durham Region. The week-long Fair will be held at St. INSTANT WINDWARD SIDE. Steve is really looking forward to his week long stay on the East Coast. (See story) Mary's University and the students will stay on the campus there. All expenses are paid, including air fare. And the organizers of the Fair have put together a very interesting itinery for the youngsters which includes side trips to historic Peggy's Cove; a visit to the Oceanography Institute, tours of the science labs at St. Mary's, and a day long deep sea fishing trip. Steve has competed in Science Fairs at his school in the past, but this is the first time he won a first at the Regionals. He is an A student in all subjects, but not surprisingly, says his favourite is science. His hobbies include sports, music, Dungeons and Dragons and comput- ers. The youngster has a home computer and gets a kick out of making up his own programs. After a week in Halifax, he'll home on May 20. return Generators (The Quiet Ones) *6 Models to Choose From.
