What happens if the power goes out in the middle of surgery? The hospital has its own emergency generator under the care of John Gibbons, manager of engineering and maintenance. He is also responsible for the main boilers. So, what makes a busy, modern hospital tick? . People. Most of us automat- .ically think of the doctors and nurses. For the pa- tients especially, they are the most visible peo- ple working ina hospital. But there are a lot of others, who are not so visible, yet their daily work is essential to the smooth running of the hospital. Saturday, May 12 is "Canada Health Day" and the theme this year is "Behind the Scenes in Health Care." Last week, the Star paid a visit to Communi- ty Memorial Hospital in Port Perry, to take a look at some of the people who work behind the scenes. Most of them are rare- ly seen by the patients, but the work they do is fundamental to quality patient care. From housekeeping to personnel; lab technologists to maintenance staff; dietary to administra- tion; admission and medical records; physiotherapy and phar- macy; these are the peo- ple who work "behind the scenes." They cook, clean, analyse your blood, prepare medications, type, answer the phone, make repairs to equip- ment and keep the lights burning if the power goes off. They keep track of medical records, pur- chase supplies, make up pay-rolls and wash dishes. Health Day this year is a salute to all those who work hard "behind the scenes in health care' at Community Memorial Hospital. Jim Perrault and Garnet Zimmerling work in maintenance on everything from renovations to fixing mechanical, electrical and boiler systems.
