Plans were made for the Bicenten- nial celebration on July 7th. A plant and bake sale proved interesting with Mrs. Rika Wygerde, the capable auctioneer assisted by the Presi- dent. Proceeds amounted to $34.85. The program concluded with the W.I. Grace. A delicious lunch was serv- ed by the executive. Mrs. Winnifred Davison ex- pressed appreciation to one and all for the en- joyable meeting. Family Visitations Mrs. Verna Abernethy of Bowmanville was a guest this week with her sister Mrs. Ella Bowers, Nestleton. Ralph and Cecile Bowers and Tracy of Tyrone, and Clifford Dayes from Alberta, who is having a holiday with relatives and friends was also a guest at the Bower's home on Sun- day. Very pleased Mr. George Bowers is im- proving in Port Perry Hospital and expects to return home soon. Con- gratulations to Constable Jerry Bowers of Peter- borough, who has been an OPP for the past 20 years. He received an award recently for his many years of service. Guests with Mrs. Min- nie Fisher, Caesarea, on Mother i Day were Barry and Frances Fisher ana Susan of Lon- don, Delton and Marge Fisher, West Hill, and Frank and Betsy Staniland of Blackstock for evening dinner. Mrs. Neta Fish and Mrs. Mabel Cawker step- ped out on Wednesday, and enjoyed lunch at Emiel's Place Restaurant in Port Perry. A nice change of . pace! A good friend and former resident of Nestleton, Mrs. Olive Heaslip had a special Mother's Day on Sunday, May 13, when her nephew Lionel McKeown of Oakwood invited her to go to Sandhill United Church (near Bolton) to a great, great niece's baptismal service. Jen- nifer Anne Knight, daughter of Dave and Anne Knight was welcomed into the - Church family - the ser- vice a symbolic rite with deep religious significance. A great family get-together was held after the impressive service. Ralph and Leona Sadler and Richard and Janice MacKenzie, Claire and Leslie of Nestleton, were Mother's Day guests with Ian and Gloria Scott, Charles and Jennifer of Corbyville. Sunday guests with the Sam Cawkers of Nestleton, were Chas. and Nell Cawker of Scar- borough. In the after- noon, they all had a nice visit with Robt. and Madeline Cawker and Ernie of Scugog Island. Organizational Meeting An organizational meeting to form a young women's U.C.W. unit in - Nestleton United Church was held last Wednesday evening, May 16, with 10 interested young women attending. Rev. Dale Davis and Marion Larmer were present - Marion. acting in the capacity of a Resource person. She gave the girls a great deal of help regarding U.C.W. work. Canvass A Success Folks in the area of Cartwright will be pleas- ed to know that the 1984 Cancer Drive held dur- ing the month of April went over the top. The gratifying results amounted to a fine total of $4,303. Warmest thanks to all who assisted - the generous donors and the hard working volunteer canvassers. Blue Ray Chapter Honours Matrons Patrons & Associates Several members from this area were pre- sent for the special night held on Thurs. May 10, in the Masonic Temple, Port Perry, when Matrons, Patrons and Associates were honoured. The Worthy Matron Elsa Bongard, Worthy Patron Chris Dennis and Assoc. Matron Joyce Taylor ex- tended a warm fraternal welcome to the large number of guests from neighbouring chapters. Guests were there from- Durham; Sunbeam; Whitby; Pickering; West Hill; Laurel; Fidelity; Peace Rose; Faith; Georgetown; Golden Deed; Markham; Scar- borough and Blue Ray - a great assembly of sisters and brothers pre- sent for a "gala" evening. Business During the business period a sizeable dona- tion was voted to aid Larry Cooke in his fight against Multiple Sclerosis. (The Order of the Eastern Star is a world-wide benevolent organization with each respective chapter rais- ing funds for a variety of worthy causes. Possibly the best known project is ESTARI- a fund set aside to assist young men and women studying for the Ministry, Mission Field, Youth Leadership and so forth). Easter plants were given to hospital patients, shut-ins, etc., to: add a bit of cheer. The lovely quilt made by Past Matrons was on display and tickets are available - just call con- vener Kay Walker. Phone 985-3158. After the closing of the chapter, a happy social hour ensued. The temp- ting lunch with Margaret Cornish, convener, was enjoyed by all, before wending our homeward. way Euchre Results The Wednesday evening winners as follows: First prize- Joan Brisco- 76; Second- Dawn Bayley- 74; Three for low- Del Marlow, Faith Lawrence and Gwen Robins. Next week as usual. Nestleton Presbyterian Church The Nestleton Presbyterian had a fair attendance for the regular Sunday morning service. Rev. Fred Swann took his text from Ephesians 2- topic- "The Church is a fellowship of people who are members of the family of God, and have a oneness of all the members of the family which takes precedence over the satisfaction re- our physical and mental needs because of our faith." Next Sunday at 10 a.m. A Disastrous Fire We regretted very much to hear of the fire on Wednesday at the Beacock Hardware in Blackstock. Fortunately, there was no loss of life. Our thoughts are with the Beacock family at this difficult time. The Hardware was a favourite place to shop for many within the area. Get Well Thoughts Very pleased to hear ° that Mr. Cecil Henderson of St. Christopher is home after a lengthy so- journ in Oshawa Hospital. Also- Mrs. Helen Moore of Nestleton Village is home from Wellesley Hospital, and pleased she is walking with the help of two canes - her sister is stay- ing with her at present. Miss Ruth Proutt of Nestleton Village is much the same in Port Perry Hospital. We trust Ruth will soon feel much better. All the best from this area to these fine folks!
