10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 12, 1984 Scugog Shores Museum will be the sight of special celebra- tions on June 30th and July 1st when Pioneer Days presents a special display of artifacts and crafts tracing the history of the Ojibway - Mississauga Indian from 1784 to the present day concentrating on the "Indian families of Scugog Island. A temporary shelter is being built to house the said artifacts in an area designated to also accomodate basket mocassins, the splitting "of ash bark, the cooking of Indian corn soup and sauce-gun bread. Relatives and friends from Curve Lake will assist the native crafts- man of Scugog interpret the different crafts. This project has rec- eived financial assist- ance from the Depart- ment of the Secretary of State of Canada and from Scugog Council. Under the capable direction of Mrs. Grace Hastings, the music tent will offer continuous on both days. Make sure you check the black- board at the tent entrance for time of performances of your favourite entertainer. Watch the Star in the coming weeks for a more detailed program. The children have not been forgotten. On Sat- urday at 2:00 p.m. an on ground parade will be held for all the children present in bi-centennial dress. You will be able to watch the sheep shear- ing; learn how to work the lathe expertly; enjoy the ring of the blacksmith's hammer; try your hand at making shingles; stroll around the buggies and other vehicles of yesteryears, admire the steam engines; watch the making of butter, cider, sourkraut, ice cream or gingerbread men and marvel at the talents of the weaver, spinner, tatter, quilter, rug maker, china painter and candle maker. ~ When you are tired you can stop for a spot of tea and delicious home- made goodies made and served by the ladies of the Head Church UCW. Before leaving the grounds you can pick up some treats from the bake sale table and some baked beans from the Greenbank House. If you love a chall- enge, enter one of the Museum Pioneer Days celebrates 200 years apple peeling, nail hammering, log splitt- ing, sawing, bag tying etc. Children will also have a chance to prove their expertise at differ- ent pioneer challenges. All the buildings will be open and friendly guides will be on hand to answer your questions or elaborate on the artifacts. It will be two colourful days of fun and learn- ing. Do plan to attend.
