Mothers and daughters attend Guide banquet Blackstock Area News by Joyce Kelly . The annual Mother and Daughter Banquet was held on Monday, June 4th at the Black- stock Recreational Centre. The Banquet was opened with God Save the Queen. Next Commissioner Miss Sheen made a toast to the Queen. Elaine Kelly then made a toast to the Guiding Movement with leader Suzanne Clarke replying. Vicki Schry- burt made a toast to the Mothers with Mrs. Ellis replying. Eleanor Kelly and Janice Bell led the group in grace. A de- lightful supper was served by the Ladies Auxiliary. After supper Jennifer Fletcher thanked the ladies for the supper. Then some presentations were made. Gifts were given to three girls who will be going to Pennsylvania this summer. These girls are Jennifer Fletcher, Vicki Schry- burt and Sharon Dyer. A gift was also given to Elaine Kelly who will be going to England and Scotland for three weeks this summer. Gifts were then given to the leaders who will be retiring this year. These leaders include Carole Locke, Alice Waldriff, Alice Brown, Shirley Love, Sharon Umprey and Judy Gilbank. A special presentation was made by Joyce Kelly who presented Miss Sheen with a gift. Miss Sheen has been District Commissioner for the past five years and will become Inter- national Advisor for the Division. The leaders of the various Units gave their reports telling of the many activities during the past year. All Round Cords, the highest award in Guides were presented to Vicki Schryburt, Lorrie Swain and Brandie Waldriff. Esther Kelly had rec- eived her cord during the year since last banquet. Congratul- ations girls on your great achievement. It was with pleasure that Miss Sheen announced that Mrs. Merv. Bayley will become the new District Commissioner with Beth Schryburt as Deputy Commissioner. After Taps the evening closed with the singing of O Canada. They also visited Bob Mabhaffy who is a patient in the hospital with heart pro- blems. Mrs. Helen Gotham of England is spending part of the summer with her son and daughter-in- law Bernie and Glenys Gotham. , Better health is wish- ed for Roy Turner who is in Oshawa Hospital following surgery last Monday. Howard Bailey and Craig Paisley spent the weekend visiting friends in Waterloo. Franz-Josef Ruther of Germany who spent several months here on a student exchange a year ago has returned to visit Mr. and Mrs. Neil Bailey, Howard and Tara and his many friends in this area. Welcome back Franz- Josef. The weekly card party results are as follows: 1st-Gladys Potts-91; 2nd 'Norman Rohrer - 86; 3rd - Percy Van Camp-85; 4th Doris Rohrer - 82; 5th - Jim Gray - 78; 6th Lorna Swain -76; Draws were won by 1. Ethel Goble, 2nd Harold Swain 3 Ross Wingrove. The Blackstock Women's Institute met in the Community Hall on Wed. June 6. They enjoyed a delicious dessert lunch served by Jean Adams and her group. The Institute Ode was sung and the Mary Stewart Collect was repeated by all. Dora Martyn read a poem entitled 'The Lady with the Lamp'. Edith Mc- Laughlin introduced Joan Graham who delighted us with a talk and pictures of their "Farm Trip to Europe"'. Dora Martyn thanked the ladies for all the events we had worked on lately. Minutes were read and adopted and the treasurer's report was received. The Fair exhibit is to be kitchen articles from yester- year. Mrs. Hoogeveen is looking after the park. The Insititute will help 4-H groups in the fall and will decide in what area and how much. We are invited to Nestleton for July 4th meeting and Maple Grove in October. Roll Call was an outdated piece of machinery and tell how it was used. Mrs. Lillian Wilson replied to the motto. Most of the prints in the sands of time were made by work boots. Meeting closed with 'O Canada'. At the United Church on Sunday morning two babies were presented for infant baptism. They 1 I were Shannon Jessie, daughter of Dennis and Melody Franssen, and Archie David Hopper- ton, son of David and Gerry Hamilton. Lois, Brian and Jill Van Camp sang a trio accompanied by Lois on her guitar which was very appropriate for the occasion. Rev. D. Davis' sermon entitled 'Listen Gently" dealt with the Pentecost. The students of Cart- wright High School enjoyed a day in Tor- . onto. They visited McLaughlin's Planet- arium, Toronto City Hall, Osgoode Hall, Toronto Stock Ex- change and then went on to Ontario Place where they spent the afternoon and then saw a concert by the group 'Nylons'. Sunday supper guests following Decoration Service of Mrs. Pat Fletcher, Dianna and Scott were Mr. and Mrs. Kittle of Bobcaygeon, Mr. and Mrs. John Fletcher of Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Gord Woolcott, Lindsay, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hoskin, Nestle- ton, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Grham, Rob of Blackstock, Cheryl Gra- ham of Oshawa and Chris Mackie of Brook- lin. The Blackstock Rangers and their leaders enjoyed a clos- ing of the year party with dinner at "The Magic Car" followed by a movie in Oshawa. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 12, 1984 -- 25 Weatherman helped out Seagrave and Area News by Patty Williams The Seagrave Cub Pack attended the 15th Annual Pine Ridge Dis- trict Cuboree over the weekend in Uxbridge. The weatherman co- operated for the 2-day overnight camp out and balmy temperatures. Eleven cub packs from the Region attended and leaders Greg and Liz Smith, Deidre Obey, Rodd John and Ian Smith supervised the 16 boys for the weekend. - The enthusiasm and all-round good behavior displayed by the boys was rewarded with the Brian Rabb Memorial Trophy for 'Best All- Round Pack' at the Cuboree. Congratu- lations! The cheese sale held by the Seagrave Play- group was very success- ful with enough money being raised to cover the cost of the bus to the Metro Zoo. Many thanks to those mothers who made an effort to practice their salesman- ship and especially to Mr. Wm. Kelly who took care of the rather large order. June 12th and 14th will be the last meetings of Playgroup for this year. The Tuesday group will be meeting as ususal and the Thursday group will be having a little Graduation Party. Ple 'se meet at 1:00 at the Chuch as usual but weau.er permitting, we will go to the park for races and a picnic. Congratulations to Joanne Nobbs of Sea-, grave and John Molen- aar of Pinedale who became engaged this past weekend. Best of luck in the future to this very special couple. For those in the area who are sending their children to Immaculate Conception School in Port Perry, its great news to hear that plans for a fully equipped school building are well underway. Mr. Grant Andrews, from the Dur- ham Region Separate School Board attended the Wed. night meeting of the Parent's Guild with a presentation of the project's develop- ment. It appears that the new school will be ready in the not-so- distant future. The pupils at Green- bank school thoroughly enjoyed the excursion to Toronto last week. At the Young People's Theatre they were treat- ed to a presentation of Jacob Two Two and the Hooded Fang. Follow- ing lunch they enjoyed various activities at the Harbour Front complex including a boat cruise, pottery classes and a tour of the Computer Complex. Unity at Latcham The Human Unity evening on Wednesday June 13th (this very Wednesday!) promises to be dynamic - 8 p.m. at the Latcham Centre (Not the Library as previously announced). This get together in Port Perry is a reflection of the 11th International Human Unity Confer- ence to be held in Boston, July 19th-22nd. Many fascinating local folk will let us know how they and their groups are linking humanity both locally and globally. Dr. Adams and Dr. Mannen will be inform- ing us about new approaches to health care. Dave Sparling will share exciting inform- ation on waste recycling projects. Marge Preston will represent Community, | Care and Doug Mannen the Port Perry Lions Club and their work. Paul Arculus, travelier extroadinary, will touch on International aspects of education. John Rich- mond, Bill Lishman, Alan Fisher and Maureen Saulked are some of the others who will be talking.
