It was planned for months in advance and almost always held in the garden of one of the community's "nicer" homes on a sunny Sun- day afternoon. There were ladies in fine dresses, music and poetry, romance forthe young folk and a dance to romp with playmates, for the children. And, of course, there were strawberries. Dunked in fresh cream or baked snug into mouth-water- ing pies. Whatever happened to the strawberry social garden party? A group of Prince Albert UCW members were wondering just that recently, and decid- ed the garden party had gone the way of the horse and buggy - reserved strictly for wedding receptions and memories. But wouldn't it be wonderful, they thought, to celebrate Ontario's bicentennial with an honest-to-good- ness old-fashioned garden party, right on the front lawn of some- body's farmhouse? Andrea Jones, in par- ticular, thought it was a great idea. She lives with her family on Sharview Farm, the large, white farmhouse just south of Prince Albert Public School. The house has a lot of history packed into its rambling foundation, including the ghosts of many, many straw- berry socials. Seventy years ago, it was the ideal place to have a garden party. It was close to the church, had a beautifully big front yard with plenty of tall shade trees, and a verandah that made a perfect stage for enter- tainment. Local lady Florence Smith remembers that one of her first dates with her husband Ben was spent at a straw- berry social at Sharview Farm (although it wagn't named that until much later). Grant Hunter grew up on the farm and recalls how once a year his parents would gussy up the property with decor- ations in preparation for the annual strawberry socials. '"We used to have them every year -- all the churches used to have them on different farms,' he says. "There wasn't such a thing as babysitters in those days," agrees his wife, Eva. "Everybody 'would come". The strawberry socials were first held on the farm by the Weir family, who counted among their members a former reeve of Reach Township.
