20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, July 4, 1984 Great pitching, timely hits lead to tourney victory 'Super week for Port Legion team L "Port Perry Legion capped their most successful week in team history by winning the "Bernie Nicholls' Fast- ball tournament in Hal- iburton. Bernie; Star Center of the Los Angeles Kings ran a well organized and com- petitive tournament over the holiday week- end. --~---- la. The Legion squad went 'the undefeated route by beating Sutton 1-0, Whitby Legion 4-1, Toronto Royals 4-3, and Bernie's hometown team, West Guilford 5-0. The 1st game on Saturday matched Sutton's ace pitcher Al Heintzman against our own John Annis and John prevailed 1-0 on a ad 8 (3 Jay Neill and Diane Burt (left) emerg- ed as Port Perry Tennis Club champions in the mixed doubles competition held over the slick 3 hitter. The game was tight from start to finish with base runners on every inning but one for both teams. Port finally cracked through in the bottom of the 6th inning when Dave Dickson led off with a single and Will- iams followed with a RBI double. In their last at bat in the top of the 7th, Sutton left runners on 2nd and 3rd when Annis struck out the last batter to vreserve the tense victory. Game two followed later in the day with Port defeating league rivals, Whitby Legion 4-1. Lawrie Williams was Port's starter in this game and lasted until the 5th inning when weekend. They beat Ken Elliott and Sophia Brendon in a gruelling final match 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. In the consolation final, John McKelvey and his sister Mary defeated Georgia Brock and Mike Tobin by scores of 7-6, 6-1 and 6-4. More than 40 competitors took part in this annual event at the Port Perry Tennis Club. "oe hee " was June 18 Jeff Card of Home Hardware had an excellgnt night at the plate in a 26-2 win over Port Perry Travel. Rusty Hood had some good hits for the Port Perry Travel team. Richard Tripp with a home run and 2 RBI's helped Sportsland beat Square Boy Pizza 21-11. Bill Saniford also had a home run and 3 RBI's for Square Boy. Bruton's and Sea- grave had a real slug- fest battle in a 24-23 win for Brutons. Both Mike Tripp of Brutons and Scott Wylie of Seagrave had 3 home runs each. Greenbank"s 16-14 win over Brian's Towing highlighted by Barbara Ann Phair's good hitting. Scott Hess- man had a good glove in fielding for Brians. June 25 Jasen and Melissa Dawson the brother and sister team of Home Hardware were swing- ing some mean bats in the 36-9 victory over Greenbank. Jasen's 2 home runs and 12 RBI's he was relieved by John Annis while holding a 2-1 lead. The winning, run came in the bottom of the 4th inning when hot hitting Dave Dickson led off with a single and was driven in by Todd Wilbur. Port scored 2 runs in the 6th on a wild pitch with runners on 2nd and 3rd base with 2 out. On Sunday morning Port Legion met the top team in the beaches league in Toronto and nipped them 4-3. Pitcher John Annis started, but was replaced by Lawrie Williams in the 1st inning with one out and 2 runs in for Toronto. Lawrie pitched a masterful game allow- ing only 3 hits and 1 run over the next 6 innings. Lawrie started the Legion come back with a solo homerun in the 2nd inning narrowing the score to 2-1. Colin Wackett tied things up in the 3rd inning by getting to 1st on a error and eventually scoring on a passed ball. In the 5th inning with Wackett on base and 2 out, Port's Grant Jackson on a 3-2 count blasted a triple to the fence in center field and continued on home when the relay hit him sliding into 3rd base and went out of bound. and Melissa's 4 booming singles .were devastat- ing to the Greenbank team. Ryan Clark made a key out while playing catcher. Sportsland beat Brian's Towing 22-13 with good fielding from Carrie McLellan for Sportsland and Misty Garvock had some excellent hits on the Brian's Towing team. Seagrave had a close victory over Port Perry Travel 26-23. Lisa Whalen and Mark John- The game was not settled yet; as Toronto counted 1 run in the 6th inning. Then their 1st batter in the 7th inning singled, was sacrificed to 2nd, and stole 3rd base. Their clean-up batter came to the plate and hit a fly ball to right field which was caught by Ron Redman who in turn, rifled a throw to the plate to nip the runner on a great block and tag by catcher Todd Wilbur. Championship In the championship game, Port met the survivor of the 1 game losers which happened to be the host team, West Guilford. Port started quickly with 3 runs in the 1st inning. Colin Wackett singled and was tagged out between 2nd and 3rd base when Rick Evan$ laid down a perfect bunt. Todd Wilbur then followed with a single and came home on Dave Dickson's double to center field. Jay Will- iams then stepped to the plate and hit a mamm- oth homerun to center field breaking open the game. In the 3rd inning, Wackett and Dickson scored again after hitt- ing safely when Jay Williams hit a double to Mite League results son were hitting well for P.P. Travel. Toby Shewan had some excellent defensive plays too. Seagrave had excellent fielding from Mandy Porter, Kim Poppleton and Laurie Buscher. Square Boy narrowly edged Brutons in a 20-19 victory. Jennifer Morden was heavy with the batting while Brad Richardson was making good catches. Kevin McGriskin of Brutons hit 2 home runs in that tough loss. Ladies win it 12-9 The Dennis Anderson Chev Olds (DACO) Ladies Lob Ball team from Port Perry defeat- ed the Port Perry Nurs- ing home team by a score of 12 to 9 last Wednesday evening. Colleen Parks for DACO playing right field chalked herself up a double play by making a difficult catch and then getting the ball to fipst base before the runner could get back to tag up. Bonnie Fitz- gerald brought in two DACO runs with her home run. An excellent effort on second base was put forward by Michelle Andrews playing for the Nursing Home ladies. DACO plays at home Wednesday evening at the ball diamond on Water Street at 8 p.m. center field giving him 4 RBI's for the game. Pitcher John Annis was never in any trouble cruising to victory on a nifty 2 hitter. Losing pitcher was Jim Chil- vers. League Earlier in the week the Legion team played 3 league games; white washing the Oshawa Juniors 6-0 in Oshawa, edging Lindsay Mer- chants at home 2-1 and losing in Lindsay 1-0. In Oshawa against the Juniors the Legion boys jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning and scored one more in the 4th inning and ended it with 3 in the 7th inning. Winning pitcher was John Annis while the hitting stars were Lawrie Williams and Bob Evans. At home on Wed- nesday night; pitcher Lawrie Williams tossed a 3 hitter giving up an unearned run in the 6th inning. Port scored in . the 2nd inning on a double by Dave Dickson and a triple by Jay Williams. It stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth; with 1 out Jay and Lawrie Williams singled back to back setting the table for light hitting Mike Healey, who promptly smacked the game winning hit. Thursday night Port travelled to Lindsay to take on the Merchants, but were thwarted 1-0 on 2 singles and an over throw in the bottom of the 9th inning. John Annis pitched a solid game, but didn't have any offensive help on this particular night. Future games see the Legion team playing in Whitby on Tuesday night and home against the Oshawa Juniors Wednesday night. On the weekend Port travels to Richmond Hill for their annual tournament with games Friday and Saturday. Many thanks from the team go to young Todd Wilbur who supplied the catching duties on the weekend and did it quite well. His solid play and enthusiasm was felt throughout the tourna- ment.
