a ---- a mr non 3 : : H : July 1 was Canada Day, and what bet- ter way to wish happy birthday to a great country than a traditional display of fireworks. A huge crowd gathered Sunday evening behind the Scugog Library to see the fireworks sponsored by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce. This shot was taken at a four second exposure at F4 using 400 ASA film. Township selects John Mackey Marina operator chosen Scugog Township council has selected John Mackey to operate a new marina under lease when and if such a facility is built on the Port Perry waterfront. Mr. Mackey, who has worked at Port Perry Marina for the past five years, was selected from two applicants who expressed interest in operating a .new Township owned marina. The Township had sought public pro- posals for this operation earlier this year. The decision to grant Mr. Mackey the lease arrangement was made by council at the meet- ing June 25. The plan by the Town- ship calls for the re- moval of the municipal- ity owned marina on the waterfront late this fall, with construction of a new facility on the same location to take place over the winter months to open in the spring of 1985. It is estimated that the cost of the new facility would be about $100,000 for the building, and the Township is now in the process of apply ing for half that amo { through a BILD a from the provincial government. The re- mainder would be paid by Scugog Township, which would continue to own both the land and the building. If the initial BILD grant for the building is aproved, there could be further grants available for additional work on the marina and surr- ounding grounds. Township administ- trator Earl Cuddie said it is not known just when the BILD grant will be approved for construc- tion, but council is hoping the timetable for a new facility by next spring .will be met. Lake Scugog safe so far As the days grow hotter and stickier, feel free to cool off with a dip in Lake Scugog. Representatives of the Durham Region Health Unit have been testing the water for about a month now and so far the bacteria levels have been low. A student hired by the unit has been testing the water two or three times a week at various locations, including the ENTER OUR Kinsmen Beach in Port Perry, Caesarea, View Lake and Lakeside Beach. The testing will continue throughout the summer. Signs were posted on the Kinsmen Beach late last August warning swimmers of unsafe water conditions. High bacteria counts, the highest ever recorded in the lake, forced Dur- ham's director of environment to order TEDDY BEAR CONTEST FIRST PRIZE - $25. BEAR'S TOY SHOP 189 Queen St., Port Perry - 985-8011 the beach closed. It remained closed for the rest of the season. According to health officials, the problem was caused primarily by sewage, either run- off from field fertilizer, storm sewers or munici- pal sewage outlets. The warm water tempera- tures of Lake Scugog's weed problem were also probable culprits. This year it looks as though the lake will, again be strangled by weeks unless something is done to curb their growth. Last week Scugog Township Council agreed to tackle the weed problein with chemicals, rather than a harvester, such as the one employed last summer.
