Maybe it was the cool weather. On Saturday, July 7th, the Nestleton Communi- ty celebrated the 10th an- niversary of their Com- munity Centre with a gala Bicentennial Day. In spite of cooler weather the various events prov- ed interesting to those who participated or watched. Ball games, horshoe pitching and log sawing was popular. The greas- ed Pig Contest was disappointing as the pig was too bewildered by all the attention to run. At 3:45 p.m. the Flag Raising Ceremony took place. Warren Rohrer, Chairman of the Rec Committee was M.C. assisted by Norma Frew, President of the Women's Institute. Allan Lawrence MP, Ross Stevenson MPP and Mayor Jerry Taylor were present and took part. The Nestleton W.I. had provided a 35 ft. flag pole and the Bicentennial Beautifica- tion Committee had planted a flower bed at its base and other colour- ful planters. A school group with Niki Bardeleben accompany- ing on the piano sang several appropriate numbers under the direc- tion of teacher Miss K. Morton. Also present for the ceremony were the Fort George Boys (Scouts) local Guides and Scugog Firemen. Mrs. Foster was assisted by Brenda Gibson, Liz Fulford and Aleta Leask. The meet- ing was then chaired by Mrs. Mary Jean Till and a lengthy business meeting followed. A bake sale - July 13 was planned to help fray the cost of the P.A. system. Several ladies attended the Region Rally at Valentia. An invitation was extended from the UCW ladies of Prince Albert and to attend their meeting on June 13. It was also announc- ed that the bales were ready for delivery. The meeting ended with the president read- ing an article on "Dynamo In White Running Shoes' and a lovely lunch was then served. Historical displays had been set up by the Women's Institute, United Church, the Presbyterian Church and Mrs. Shirley Scott and her daughter demonstrated the art of carding and spinning wool Several ladies wore old-fashioned dresses. Court Lady Snowbird ran a booth selling cider, lemonade, popcorn etc., and raffled off a Cabbage Patch Doll. Doreen Van Camp was selling copies of the Township History Nestieton salutes the Bicentennial "Cartwright Re- Suk, 1983". At 4:30 p.m. the Pork Barbecue sponsored by the Committee and con- vened by Anne Lee, pro- ved a real success. Howard and Terry Malcolm were in charge of the Barbecue Pit. The ladies of the community had donated an abun- dance of scrumptuous desserts. Our hats are off to all who did such a fan- tastic job! Dancing to the lively music of Herb Vine and Durham County brought rand the day to a successful conclusion. The commit- tee would like to thank those who worked so hard completing the children's play equip- ment, installing sidewalks, flagpole; the Pine Ridge Garden Club Bicentennial Beautification Commit- tee for flowers; all who helped spruce up the park for this special oc- casion. It was good to see all the organizations who use the Community Cen- tre co-operating on this -- its 10th Anniversary.
