Mrs. Fortune, who resides in Blackstock with husband Bill-grew up in Durham County and has clearly shown that she is a well deserving recipient of such an honour. She first started teaching in her hometown immed- iately after completing high school. Since then, she has continued her education-first to attain her Teacher's Certifi- cate, and later to acquire the qualifi- cations to teach Special Education. Mildred has used her skills wisely in aiding parents and teachers through her noted words "A child's wR, 7'\ PRATT & LAMBERT INTER ITIREIV FIGHTS BLISTERING EASY CLEAN-UP Curiosity is Infinite', - "The Primary Teacher with the New Book of Knowledge' and "What Do You Think" - guides which help adults to understand children and their education. Added to her accom- plishments, she also helped set up the origin- al speed reading course at York University, designed and taught other such courses for use at Ryerson, Sheri- dan College and other educational institutions, and on top of that, she managed to complete a BA degree at University of Toronto. For the past ten years L'Amoreaux Collegiate has been privileged to have Mrs. Fortune as a member of the staff. She teaches classes in English, in Remedial Reading, and runs the Bridge Program, - a programe which assists students who are having particular difficulty in the core subjects. She is the backbone of social committees, education- al committees, extra curricular activities for both staff and students. She truly is an essential part of L'Amoreaux Collegiate. Mildred Fortune's views on education are an important aspect of her make up. Her under- standing of to-days students has greatly helped abridge the gap between the teacher and the student. She realizes the changes in Society have affected the educational system, and has adjusted her teach- ing methods to these changes. In her view, she sees that the students of to-day "do not have it as easy' as they did a few years back. She is aware of the greater responsibil- ity placed on the stud- ents in regard to their future plans - because of the constant changes and advancements. As a result, she has become an important guiding factor to many a student and teachers. History however, does not begin to tell the story of Mildred Fortune. It is her magnificant personal characteristics that make her an exception- al teacher and a close friend of all those who are fortunate enough to come in contact with her. She is a warm, friendly, very human person who extends her- self for others. She is the most positive, optimis- tic person that you will ever meet. There are no "road-blocks" to what she has decided to do. Her energy is bound- less. Her commitment is total. The key to Mil- dred's success as a teacher is her ability to make students feel really good about them- selves. She is a model for the young, and not so young teachers to follow.
