Last Sunday Mike Swanson of Peterbor- ough competing in the Westmount Kiwanis Club of Oshawa Pro- Bass Tournament land- ed a 6.32 pound bass, making him the winner of the largest caught during the two-day event. It is estimated that during the two days of fishing over 200 bass were caught and releas- ed. recording at total weight of 419 pounds. Favourable comm- ents from the fishermen competing have encour- aged Kiwanis Club officials to hold the event again next year, P| weigh the fish. The tournament, which attracted 44 two- man teams to Port Perry, commenced on Friday evening at the Latcham Centre with an orientation meeting which set out the rules and boundaries. Saturday morning commencing at 6:00 a.m., officials checked each of the bass-boats to make sure nobody was using live bait, and to make sure they each had a live-well and their safety equipment. At precisely 7:00 a.m. the boats headed for open water and which would last until 4:00 p.m. that after- noon. At this time all fishermen returned to the government dock at the foot of Queen Street and brought in their catches (live) to be weighed and recorded. Following this dure, the fish were placed in a recovery tank, and when officials felt they were strong enough, they were tran- sported by boat to the middle of Lake Scugog As each boat returned fo the government dock, their catch was weighed and record- ed on a large board. The winners of the tournament were able to, catch their limit of 12 bass which weighed in at 25.87 pounds. For their efforts, the winners, Gary Clark of Oshawa and Maurice Bajcar of Columbus won $1068 in cash, a 15 H.P. Mariner outboard and jackets. The only adverse comments from the fish- ermen according to officials was the pro- blems they were having in the weeds, but most felt it was a very well - run tournament. Westmount Kiwanis officials indicated that they would make about $1500 from the tourna- ment and the money would go towards community projects in their area.
