Labour pool marks decade of helping farms The East Central, Canada Farm Labour Pool (CFLP) was first introduced to the area in July, 1974, and the office is still at the original location, 170 Queen Street, Port Perry. The originating Manager, Rolly Coy and the office assistant Dianne Foote still maintain the oper- ation. The central office is now suppleniented by Field Representative Anne-Marie McMorrow in Cannington and Isabel Stinson in Have- lock. The CFLP provides one of the Government's most specialized agri- cultural employment services. The program is funded by CEIC and the CFLP works in conjunction with an advisory group referred to as the Local Agricult- ural Manpower Board (LAMB). This board is made up of members from the agricultural commodities of the area. In the East Cent- ral district this is prim- arily dairy, beef and hogs combined with some cash crops and horticultural farms. The originating Chairman was George Oliver, Pet- erborough and since then Harvey Graham, Blackstock; Donald Rickard, Bowmanville and presently Edward Bagshaw, Lindsay. The primary objective of the LAMB is to provide advice and make rec- ommendations for: agricultural wage rates, hours of work, worker accomodations etc. - agricultural training needs of the area. - effective operation of the CFLP, point of service, etc. Over the past ten years the CFLP has consistently provided whatever service poss- ible for farm employers and workers. A review of this history provides volumes of involvement with the underlying endeavour to improve the availability of farm labour and the career image of the industry. Some of the significant developments recalled are as follows: Oct. '74 - Local Dairy Herdworkers Training committee established to provide a 39 week Dairy Herdworkers training programme. 'Sept. '76 - Introduction of the first Fieldperson in Victoria County, Garry Lean. Sept. '77 - Introduction of the first Hoof trimm- er, Sid Roskammer. May '78 - Introduction of the first Fieldperson in Peterborough County, Dean Warner. Mar. '79 - CFLP propo- sal for agricultural Co- op education resulted in Thomas A. Stewart High School starting the programme. Apr. '79 - The first of a series of employer- employee workshops was held in Blackstock. Dec. '79 - Isabel Stinson took over as Fieldper- son for Peterborough ~ County. July '80 - Introduction of a second Hoof trimmer, Bob Hope. Sept. '80 - Recommend- ation made to establish an office at Guelph University. : Mar. '81 - Introduction of the Cannington Field office and Anne-Marie McMorrow as Fieldper- son. Oct. '81 - Sponsored a meeting of area Princ- ipals, Teachers and Board of Education members to encourage the introduction of Farm Co-operative education in the High Schol system. Oct. '83 - Introduction of a CFLP office, each Tuesday, at Guelph PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. August 21, 1984 -- 23 University. During 1974 75, the first fiscal year, we recorded 88 place- ments compared to 2358 during 1983-84. Every effort is made to provide the farming community with the best service as possible. During the busy summer months the office opens at 7:00 a.m. pufting in bales of straw at the Bastian Benschop farm south of Prince Albert last week. The Labour Pool has grown con- siderably in scope since its formation here ten years ago.
