ON Sg ey SS ASTIN 1S i i te pi A unique feature at the Blackstock Fair last Saturday was the per- formance by a group of Welsh dancers who are currently on a tour of Ontario and Quebec. The 31 young people who range in age from. Performers with the Wel those at the Blackstock Fair o 11 to 18 thrilled audien- ces at the Fair, and especially popular was the 'Dawns Y Glossen", an intricate and com- plicated dance routine performed by - boys wearing wooden clogs. This form of dancing - has its roots deep in Welsh history when young men tried to impress the ladies at country fairs. The dance group members are all stud- ents at Amman Valley High School, located in sh high school dance group thrilled n Saturday. School headmaster Caryl Edwards, who is in Canada with the group, told the Star that this first ever trip to this country for most of the youngsters has been an "'unforgettable exper- ience". He said the perform- ers have been well received everywhere they went, including Montreal, Ottawa, Oak- ville and Toronto's . Harbourfront. Mr. Edwards said the school, with just over 1500 students, has always had a strong tradition in music, dance and rugger. In fact, two rugger teams from the school are on PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. August 28, 1984 -- 1) tour of Ontario at the same time as the dan- cers. The two dance groups, junior and senior, have won numerous awards in Wales, and one of the individual clog dancers is a national champion in Wales. How did the dance .groups wind up in Blackstock performing at the Fair on August 25, much to the delight of Welsh dancers thrilled audience all who saw them? Mr. Edwards said arrangements were made through a person at Anderson High School in Ajax, which is com- peting against the rugger squads. Almost all of the students are bilingual English and Welsh - and the school works hard to maintain the Welsh language, although the language of instruction is English. For the trip to Canada, each of the students were respons- ible for the air fare (about $750) and the school itself had a series of fund-raising activi- ties to help cover other expenses.
