Debbie Egan and Barry McClure have about their unusual hobby. See story for "collected some 2,000 police patches over the years and were on hand at the Fair to talk Patch market is growing Some people collect stamps, others horde coins and comic books, but the market for police patches is still a small one. Mind you, it's grow- ing, thanks to avid collectors like Barry McClure and Debbie Egan, two Durham Region Police officers who have some 2,000 patches in their private collection. Break and enter af Mother Jackson's Durham Region Police report that a small amount of money was stolen during a break-in over the week- end at Mother Jacksons Open Kitchens on Sim- coe Street, Port Perry. Police say entry into the plant was gained through a window. There was about $400 damage done to a door panel, a desk and filing cabinet. An investigation into the incident is continu- ing. WANTED "CLASS A MECHANIC" For fiat rate Ford Service Department excellent Remuneration and Benefit Program Call Don Switzer "> 576-1800 oe) The patches are those fancy crests policemen wear on their arms, identifying which force they work for. Aside from Barry's own patch, which he was handed when he joined the Durham force seven years ago, the hobby began in earnest three years ago with trading through the mail. Barry was "fascinat- details. ed" by the hobby and soon began collecting all sorts of police memor- abilia, including hats, badges, uniforms and handcuffs. "It's a good hobby," he says, 'but it can get expensive'. Most American patches average around the $2 mark but extinct patches like those belonging to the old Port Perry police depart- ment, are worth $20 and up. Barry and Debbie figure they have between three and four thousand dollars invest- ed in memorabilia. Port Perry Fair-goers had a chance to check out the collection over the weekend when the police couple set up a display booth, attract- "ing collectors of all ages.
