Chamber group kick off by Margaret Van Camp Town Hall 1873 kicks off its Subscription Series this year with a very special event. The group, a chamber ensemble entitled "Kraft and Co."", con- sists of Norbert Kraft, classical guitarist; his wife, harpsichordist- pianist, Bonnie Silver; and tenor, Henry Ingram. The evening's program will provide much variety for the kind of music will range from serious to flam- enco, and varying com- binations of performers will be used. Norbert Kraft, the Grand Prize winner of the 1979 CBC Talent Competition, has made several appearances on CBC national television. These include the "Spectrum" series and a special program call- ed "Standing Room Only" in which he was the soloist for the Toronto Symphony Region wallet healthy After a month long summer recess in August, Durham Region council went back to work last week and were greeted with some good news about the Region's financial position. A report which will be in front of council this Wednesday (September 12) from commissioner of finance Jack Gartely shows the Region's cash on hand and investment position on July 31 stood at $28,581,000. All but $300,000 of this amount was invested in short term deposits with an average interest rate return of close to 12 per cent. By comparision, Dur- ham had $24.6 million cash on hand on July 31 a year ago. In his report to the council, Mr. Gartley says there are three main reasons why the cash surplus has in creased by more than $4 million in a 12 month period. Reserve fund bal- ances are up to $1.5 million; the increase in the year end surplus for water, sewage and gar- bage dump operations is $959,000; and the "annual fluctuations in receipt and payment of funds' has increased by $1.3 million. Durham's cash on hand position has improved dramatically in the past couple of years. Just two years ago, the figure was less than $20 million, and in February, 1982, the amount had dipped to about $2.5 million. In a separate report to council, Mr. Gartley predicts that the Region will end up with a surplus of about $245,000 on the general levy operations in 1984, and all departments are operating within the 1984 budgets. oo mmmmmmmm--_------------------ PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 11, 1984 -- 9 Orchestra.
