Individualized resident care helps handicapped Jerry is an eight year old boy who had lived in an institution for three years. When he came into the Individualized Residential Care pro- gram he had no comm- unication skills, poor eating habits, no toilet- ing skills and he requir- - ed twenty-four hour supervision. Jerry has been living in the community for the past three years. In this short time he has developed excellent communication skills, eats appropriately and only requires minimal support and super- vision. He is fully toilet-train- ed and now speaks in "full sentences. He has been developing good reading skills and eats and dresses with very little assistance. All of these develop- ments are evidence of what a dramatic change a new environment can bring about for a dev- elopmentally handi- capped child. The Indiv- idualized Residential Care Program has made it possible for another seventeen developmentally handi- capped children to live with families in the community. The Individualized Residential Care pro- gram began four years ago. Since starting out with only one family the program has been so successful that it has expanded to include many more families and it is still growing. "We have hosted many groups and individuals from various parts of the continent and abroad who have inquir- ed about this support option for develop- mentally handicapped Have You Lost Your AMWAY DISTRIBUTOR? Now You Can Get Your Products from JOHN & VICKY POPOWICH - DIRECT DISTRIBUTORS - 986-5431 We'll deliver if order is over $20.00 children and who are now developing similar programs', said John Klassen, Director, Children's Residential Services. The families that provide residential services for develop- mentally handicapped children are known as Associate Families. Natural parents of developmentally handi- capped children now have a positive individ- ualized alternative to institutional placement for their children in this Region. Associate families have been chosen and professionally trained to provide homes and all necessary support to developmentally handi- capped children. The families are provided with all the emotional, professional and finan- cial supports that they need. Associate families are also considered as employees of ADHOD Services. They receive regular salaries and a complete benefit pack- age in addition to monthly expense cheques for the use of the home, for food, recreation and special needs costs. The Individualized Residential Care pro- gram has given some women the opportunity to stay home with their children while working "as professional parents in supporting a develop- mentally handicapped child. Associate families are provided with fifteen hours of relief each week. This gives them some time for them selves. No experience is nec- essary to become an Associate family. All that is required is a genuine love for all children and the belief that any child can learn and grow. If you would like more information about the Individualized Residen- tial Care program, please contact John Klassen or Sandra Kis- sock at 571-3420 or Peter Cekuta, Director ADHOD Services at 576- 3011.
