oo ono Mlb a | Ty ee EEE -------- 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 18, 1984 How would you like an all-expense paid trip to Germany for six weeks in the summer? Well, Martha Cole and Boyd Vanderheul won themselves a trip through their interest in Cadets, and they think it's just great. See story for details. It's not every day you win a trip to Germany It isn't every day you win a trip to Germany, so Martha Cole and Boyd Vanderheul were pretty impressed when they were picked out of 450 Cadets to go there next summer. ' Both members of the Port Perry Cadet Corps (Martha's Dad is the Commanding Officer), the two sixteen year olds spent some time at Camp Borden this summer, taking various courses. Boyd was there working on, among other things, athletic leadership. Martha was concentrating on her music -- she plays flute and piccolo in the senior military band. The 450 air, sea and army cadets who were at the camp were given the opportunity to enter the contest, so the two Port Perry cadets did, without really thinking they'd win. But win they did, after a series of vigorous interview sessions, where one of the most common questions was "Why do you want to go to Germany?" "I just said that I thought it was a good experience that I could use and bring back to the corps here", Boyd, a Grade Thirteen Cart- wright High School student said. "And also to represent the country'. Martha thought "It A new granddaughter for John Prince Albert Area News by Earline Armstrong Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. John Faber over on Simcoe St. They got a new granddaughter. Although they're not too sure on the details « yet, Boyd and Martha's trip will probably last about six weeks, with a large chunk of their time spent at the Cana- dian military base in Germany. They'll be staying with approximately 30 other cadets from all over Canada. And not only will the entire trip be paid for, they'll also be paid for going. No wonder Boyd says, "It makes you feel good". He's been a Cadet for three years; Martha for four. : Although girls are still fairly rare within the ranks of Cadets, Martha says things are chang- ing. ""There's a lot of girls in the corps. It's really changed. It's not what it used to be', she says. Still, she'll definitely be in the minority when the Canadians make their way to Germany next summer. And for Martha and Boyd, who haven't done any major travelling in the past, it'll be the trip of a lifetime.
